Texas, Louisiana, South Africa,
I arrived last night on DL200 to JNB.
Couple new twists since last time thru and thought would share.
I was VIP greet thru Africa Sky.
Met like usual. It when got to customs/immigration. There is a new special line for just all those issuing a greet service. Took about 10min in that line.
Now the new twist. Checked luggage with NO ammo in it comes out on conveyor carousel like always. Bags with ammo are sent to Police Station along with guns. It’s still in a new sorting and little crazy. Delta and United flights all the guys bags with ammo went that way. Meet greet guy showed me the code that’s put on bag tag in USA saying it has ammo in it. I did notice my bag with ammo went on a different conveyor in Houston. And my AirTags showed it always stay pretty close to the rifle case as it was moved along in Houston and Atlanta. Just a new twist guys.

.

Likely only from the States. My bags with ammunition came up on the belt with all the other bags & the rifle went to SAPs.

.

I was just there on the 2nd of June and my bag with ammunition came up on the baggage carousel.
Yea. VIP meet guy says depends on how tagged and who you flew with but most now are coming in with guns. I know this time on departure Delta filled out one of the orange tags like goes in gun case and put it in my bag with ammo. According to the track cards in both gun case and that bag they stayed close togather in Houston and Atlanta. When the other bag would be know where near them.

I guess terrorists are still shipping and declaring ammo and guns? Not once has a hunter been accused or detained for helping bad guys do bad things.
Better off focusing on illegals going to any country and using the facial recognition the Israelis use at airports and ports of entry

I was there three weeks ago and none of this happened to me. I clearly indicated I had ammo in my checked luggage upon check-in at the Delta counter in the US. Could this new regulation be as of June 1st??

I was just there in mid-May and my bag with ammo came out on the normal carousel. Of course, my rifle went to SAPS. I wonder if things changed on June 1st.

Interesting but I guess not surprising. The ammo always needed to be checked by police. And we have heard enough stories about the Joberg baggage apes pilfering stuff. So your bag turns up with ammo missing. Shit hits the fan and you probably miss your connecting flight ... at least. The black market for guns is also well known. Stolen guns need stolen ammo or they don't work. I was told last time I was there thousands of police weapons are "stolen" every year. I saw YouTube video surveillance footage from one police station where a cop on night duty simply rented out his gun to sketchy dudes and they returned with it in the morning. Night after night! We drove by a military armory on our way to hunt one property and PH said no guns or ammo there any longer. Everything was getting legs so it all had to be moved. It's a different world down there. I welcome this inconvenience (if it is an inconvenience) if it keeps me safer and on time to my hunting destination.

I just got back on Memorial Day via United and this wasn't my experience. Who knows if it's new or just some random attendant coding a bag differently at check-in. Seems things are predicated by that these days. The last two times I flew the domestic carriers I didn't even have my ammo weighed which always happens on the ME airlines...

Thanks for the info Mark. I’ll e there next month so I’m curious where my bag will be. I guess if the firearms tag isn’t put in my checked bag with ammo my bag will come out on the usual carousel?
Have a great trip!!

All I know is what the Meet Greet guys and Gilbert said. This just started a week or so ago. The guys said everyone on the Delta flight and the earlier United flight. Bags with ammo go to SAPS for pick up or where the SAPS pick up guns by carousel 4. I hit mine there. Had show claim ticket. Some of the other guys got theirs in the police station.

Just wanted to pass this along for anyone coming over in the future if your bag with your ammo didn’t show up all that carousel where you might find it

Have a great time and thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update. I always carry my ammo in my checked in luggage.

Thanks for the heads up Mark. Good luck to you on the hunt!

I'm going over end of this month and saw something potentially new in the Delta app. Are they now doing the Declaration sheet online for SARS (not SAPS)? We always filled out one handed out during the flight but it said starting June 1, it will be completed online? Did recent travelers fill that out on paper per usual or online?
