Is retiring to Africa a wise decision?

One thing that is a consideration also are the gun laws of the particular country one is interested in. Some countries have draconian gun laws and are not that gun friendly at all. Not to mention customs duties etc. even if one is allowed.

My future retirement plans are to have a home base as mentioned by @NIGHTHAWK and then spend time at whatever places I wish to go. I am not retired yet but still spend 3-4 weeks each quarter traveling overseas.

What I gathered from RSA is that normal citizens are allowed to possess two long guns and with an extra permit, one handgun. Open carry only. A dedicated sportsman or dedicated hunter with training and certification is allowed a few more for competition or hunting purposes. There may also be a dedicated collector but I am not familiar with the requirements or limitations. A PH is able to possess many more or unlimited numbers. However, the requirements to become and remain certified as a PH are many. Legal foreign nationals are much more restricted. Temporary importation is easy but is limited to short visits. Longer importations is full of regulations and limitations. Much of my personal collection is not allowed into the country even on a short term hunting visa due to the Black, ugly, scary nature of some of the semi-auto rifles which look evil, so clearly, they must be baaaad.

I officially retired from my Union dispatched position yesterday! After 35 plus years. My current company wants me to stay on, in a non-steamfitter (non-dispatchable) roll in management.

I was on the fence as to whether I would stop working and travel more to fish and hunt, but I will likely continue to work find time to travel to hunt. The other reason to continue to work is goal/moving target of buying a ranch type property somewhere in the Western US. I've looked recently in the Chico area of Nor-Cal at properties that are on Butte Creek that offer acreage with some hunting and great proximity to Butte Sink duck and goose hunting clubs.

I also love San Diego for the weather and fishing! Maybe that's another moving target. Get a liveaboard sportfisher in San Diego - "NIGHTHAWK TOO".

I retired a few years ago but kept working 3 days a week for one of my clients as a contractor. When that gig wrapped up, I hunted and fished (A-Lot) and now 3-4yrs later, I am once again working part-time as a contractor to another client for 3-4 months this winter. Planning on banking enough to pay for at least two more safaris and a trip to Canada for Moose and to Alaska for something? I am fortunate that there is a demand for older, experienced professionals in my field at the moment.

I’ve also been considering where I will retire to. Other countries that I’ve visited over the years were in consideration. It’s easy to fall in love with elements of other countries, but the reality of everything that has been mentioned sets in. Safety, culture, healthcare, age, being away from aging parents, kids, or grandchildren are all a factor.

I’ll likely arrange for extended stays in places I really like (African countries I’ve yet to hunt, NZ, Australia, Alaska and Canada, Europe, as well as hunt and fish more of the states, and make the best of those opportunities. 3 months at a time seems like a reasonable start.

I’ll base out of Reno/Sparks area of Nevada for now. Income tax friendly. Great airport. Pretty clean living. I’m still looking for a ranch property that has a trophy room or space to build one…

It’s all a process.

You seem to have found what @Kevin Peacocke told us…rent for your desired time in Africa, don’t buy, several members have brought me to their thoughts…I just paid off my fully remodeled home in GA as my primary home. When I retire I will rent in Hoedspruit for 3-4 months per year, then my wife wants to rent in a place like Italy for a short time then short vacations close by us. That’s my plan
