At first I had mixed feelings about this gun, the action was a little rough and the safety was rough, but after a little G96 on the bolt and raceway and safety detents , she is smooth as glass and feeds beautifully . It would shoot 1 ½-2 inch groups, good enough for government work, but I wanted better, The trigger was at 5.3 pounds and would not adjust lower. I put in a pair of Mcarbo trigger springs and got it to 3.8 pounds and it feels real good. Got the groups to 1-1 ½ inches, going in the right direction but still wanted a little better. Much to my surprise the recoil lug and the rear tang are both glass bedded nicely, but nothing in front of the lug under the barrel shank. So I bedded the shank to about 1 ½ inch in front of recoil lug and now with 64 grains of H4895 a Fed 215 primer and 300 grain TSX it groups 1/2inch at 100 yards. I love it. I will try to load a picture , it is a 3 shot group, it is the two unmarked holes at the top of the bullseye, the other hole in the center is from a different group

Yes brand new from Portugal, I really like it. Wish I could get that picture to load.

That’s awesome, glad to hear another positive Portuguese model 70 post. I’m very pleased with my new model 375 safari express.

The Alaskans are some great looking rifles.

Congratulations! Nice groups!

That sounds like a moderately light load. Did you happen to chrono the velocity?
Yes, it is the starting load, but it is producing 2501 fps on my Garmin. Just got it, so will be doing LD

That's a really handy hunting rifle. I'm glad it's working out for you.

H4895 works very well at starting load pressures. With that accuracy and velocity I think that my load development would be done.
The Barnes 270s and 250s are great too. You might play with those.

It seems to prefer 300 gr, I shot some 270gr and they will only group 1 ½ at 100 yards, also tried some Sierra 285 gr grand slams and they only group ⅞ ". So as far as I am concerned, I prefer the 300 gr TSX anyway and yes I agree, I don't need anymore LD as far as 300 gr loads go. Overall I am extremely happy with this rifle, as it only weighs 7 ½ pounds slick and with a heavy Swarovski ZI8 34 mmm it weighs 9 pounds, perfect for a 375

I also bought an Alaskan in 338, but I have not had a chance to scope it and try it out yet, but I really like it, I hope it shoots as good as my 375 Alaskan does.

You gotta post photos of the rifle now, don't be a dick tease!

Once I got mine torqued down and Leupold fixed my scope mine is shooting <1MOA with factory Barnes TSX. I got mine around September last year new and it has been great.

I was really discouraged when I first mounted the scope but considering they fixed it from 10MOA to 120MOA guess that was the problem, lol.

I would be happy to but I can't get pictures to load on this damm site, I have tried multiple times to load a picture of the group, but can't do it. I even had Apple care support help me and they said it was a problem with the website, but I will try to post a picture of the rifle for you, she is sweet.

looking at one for an elk hunt in 338 win mag

Ill be listing a Portugal EWSS and a pile of ammo in a few days. Gonna be a good deal for someone.

The BACO model 70's are really nice. They get a little flak because of the triggers, but I find mine to be really good. They shoot well.

No, as in ZERO bedding is need directly in front of the recoil lug on ANY rifle, however the rear of the barrel should be supported by close fitting wood, or better yet, glass bedding under the chamber. That mixed with steel powder is best, IMHO.
YIKES - noise maker on the front of that rifle.

I strongly disagree, this is the second rifle that I have bedded an inch and a half in front of the recoil lug and in both case I went from 1 ½ groups to well under an inch. My Kimber Caprivi 416 is bedded this way from the factory and it too is a good shooter.

Phillip I was reviewing some of the auctions online and saw your Nubian Ibex hunt coming up this weekend. It also showed you have Addax and Axis deer. Is there a website I can go to and see the lodge, cost of animals and what is available? Thanks Mark

I really like that knife you're selling. It looks so similar to my original 1306 that has been around a long time. I can't spend that much but if you get to a point where you'd entertain offers let me know. Thx, James
Been away for a while, glad to be back
