I cant get Recknagel front scope ring to turn in the mount...help please!

Yeah those Recknagel mounts can be tight! I always make sure mine have a very light coating of grease when I mount them.
I also just bought a new Swarovski Z8i 1-8 to put on my new Highland Stalker, the Z8's are unreal. I have a few Leica scopes but I think the z8i glass is still better.

While visiting his shop I recently had a conversation with Eugene Combrink at Sabi Custom Rifles about installing these rings on a Krieghoff double. He advised me that some fitting may be required to obtain the correct tension to allow the front ring to be turned into the base. He told me that some minor filing down of the top surface of the front base may be needed so that it isn’t too stiff. In my case I will also need to mill down the spacer in the rear ring assembly to obtain proper alignment of the rings.

I’ll shoot a video here in a bit, hopefully without knees or feet in the periphery, of how easily this system works.

I’ve concluded it’s my preferred system after making a $3,500-ish error trying to swap the Z6i 1-6 on my Heym 375 Flanged to a 1.7-13x42. It has hand-fit Suhl claw mounts. I measured everything a while back to confirm it would fit, and didn’t order scope since I was unsure when I’d ever take it on a trip. Now have a plan to drag it around in October so sprung for the scope.

Figured I’d have a little learning curve messing with the rail SR system for the first time…but was straight forward. UNTIL I realized how my bone-headed-idiot ass failed to recognize one little ESSENTIAL detail…the tip-off Suhl system requires additional clearance that the swing off system doesn’t. Really doesn’t matter if there is way more room than necessary between the objective and quarter rib when mounted. And failed to pay enough attention all the times I’d taken the scope off when wiping the rifle down after shooting, since the front mount it near flush with the objective on the Z6i and there is so much room, just missed it.

Tipping the scope up, as you must to slip the front claws into the front mount before pressing the rear claws into their mount, requires additional working room that I simply do not have. Even with the front mount in the very front most possible position, the scope lacks just a couple mm of clearing. Sucks so much as I really, really….really, love this 1.7-13x42 Z8i scope. I fear my $3,500-ish mistake is going to turn into a $15k+ mistake, since I now have to likely get a proper rifle that it will fit on.

I’ve liked this tip off system enough that I was considering have it installed on my next Heym I’m ordering soon…but this sealed the deal. NOPE…I’m definitely going for the same swing off system used on the Rigby and Mauser.

I will have to admit, the one cool thing on this Suhl claw system is it’s amazingly fast and easy with one hand. It is slightly faster than the swing off and both are absolutely solid and return to zero. No real reason that a 1-2 second mount/dismount is superior to a 2-3 second one.

I finally have everything done on my new 404; Scope mounted and bore sighted with my Rigby leather sling on as well! Shooting it for first time tomorrow! Thanks everyone for your help!!! Man these Swaro Z8i’s are nice!!!

I use the EAW pivot mounts. Pretty close to what you are using.

One word of caution guys, NEVER turn the ring in the first time with a scope. Use a dowel or screwdriver handle, etc.. if you can’t get the right tension you may have a difference in radius between the mount and the receiver. This happened to me on my highland stalker and NECG had to machine it to get the correct tension. Also, these mounts are intended to have a Small amount of adhesive on the lower half of the ring. Call Mark at NECG for his advice on this. He uses an adhesive that allows removal of the scope in the future. The German advice is an almost permanent install. If you don’t use adhesive you are taking a chance with the scope slipping (don’t ask me how I know).
