i bought a husky m46 in 9.3x57. https://www.simpsonltd.com/products/z24767 i also got 9.3x57 dies, 8x57 prvi brass and 285gr prvi rn. i have a pound of imr4895 but i'm going to get h4895.

the hornady die does have a "new fangled tapered expander balls." so i sprayed lube the 8x57 prvi cases and the fl sizing die. when the 8x57's were done drying, then i lube up the inside neck, i was using lanolin paste/wax/anhydrous(don't know, but its like vasoline). then i'd take the cases into a 9.3x57 fl sizing die, it would be 2 - 3 times(upstroke) till the 8mm was upsized to 9.3mm. ( i only did the neck of the case, i left about 1/8" gap between the die and the shell holder)

next it was the wet tumbler. when the new 9.3x57 was dry, i trimmed and deburred them(2.215", they were 2.220"). i know that the norma 9.3x57 cases are 2.240" but my cases(8x57) are .025" smaller. not enough to worry about.

i took a case and a bullet and put them in a bullet seater die. i seated the bullet about a 1/8" into the case. next i took the rifle out and put the dummy round in. twice!!!! the dummy round only pushed the bullet about 1/8" in(about 1/4"). my magazine will have nothing to do with the 9.3x57 because of its length (it don't fit, 3 3/4"). too much free bore, i think. i then began to seat the bullet (magazine length). i did seat it to the magazine length, but i seated the bullet deeper, about a 1/8", (3.115") to give room.

to fire form the 9.3x57 i put in the primer, put in the charge and i topped it off with a bullet. (i'm going layman here) then i fired it. the charges were 42.0gr, 43.0gr, 43.5gr, 44.0gr and 44.5gr of imr4895/ 285gr prvi rn.

i could find no pushed out primers or soot on the cases. the shoulder of cases was pushed back and formed.

case measurement(avg. COL)
not fire formed - 2.215" COL

fire formed - 2.218" COL

fire formed and resized - 2.222" COL

in fire forming my cases(42.0-44.5gr of imr4895) i did expect the 9.3 to "kick". it was more along the lines of a "push". (kick is right now!!! and a push-it will get there, eventually

). i'd say the 9.3x57 is like your 30-06(7.5lbs) and 180gr bullet. i didn't get the accuracy or the fps, i was just shooting at the middle of target stand. from info i gathered, i could go up the charge(imr4895) about a 1 or 2, but i'll be cautious of it.

next year, i want to find a mould that goes 270-280gr fn gc in .368". it will be a clip on wheel weight(coww) and 1 or 2% tin(12ish bhn). i do have one question tho, is the 285gr prvi rn good enough for whitetail and black bears out to 150 yards? 50 yards and under is more likely tho!!!

The 285gr Prvi will be perfect for your needs. I use it in my 9.3x62 at the sedate speed of 2260fps. It was taken one red stag at 97 yds. Dumped it on the spot with a neck shot, complete penetration. I also shot a feral goat at 70yds with a Norma 285gr, again dumped it on the spot with a centre shoulder spot.
The 285gr Prvi is one of the softer projectiles, the 270gr Speer is the softest.

The 9.3x57 is about the same power level of the 358 Winchester. It will work fine on whitetails and black bear at normal hunting ranges out to 200 yards. Load them up and go hunt. If you want more reach drop down to 250 grain bullets.

A fine little rifle and one I have admired for a long time! The only reason I don't have one is because I've used the .358 Winchester since the late 1970's and I just can't talk myself into getting another so similar.:D

joe,
sell the 358 and get the 9.3 and the dilemma is solved.
compare those 2 cartridges to the 35 whelen and the 9.3x64 and the difference will be obvious.
they are in a similar zone, but the 9.3 has the edge.
if in doubt, ask bob nelson.

What rifle is your 358 in? I am an admitted 35 caliber junky. I don't have any duplicate calibers but am partial to mannlicher style stocks. I love the performance of the 35 calibers but you wouldn't use a ball peen hammer to do a finishing job would you.The husquvarna is a fine rifle. Good hunting.

I've had several but, at this moment I have a M70 Winchester and a BLR T/D Lightweight Stainless.
The M70 has been deadly on elk and deer.

I see your point. With the model 70 the husky would be more if the same.

Ballistics aside I've always had the impression that 358 projectiles and brass were easier to come by in the US. So I'd be hesitant to let mine go.

Funny thing I was just working on my home customized 358 today. Turning it into an ultralight bear rifle.

I see your point now. With a model 70 already the husky would be just more of the same.
