Anyone have experience with these copper alloy bullets? Thinking of using these for elk this December. Ballistics look really good out to 300 yards - and I won’t be shooting beyond that. https://www.hornady.com/bullets/rifle/375-cal-375-250-gr-gmx#!/
I had great success with them on 2 BC black bears. One shot kills dropping in their tracks. Then took them to Mozambique for leopard. Shot a Livingston eland 7 times with them. Failures to expand, bent bullets, animal was hit hard and hurt bad but was not going down.

Then had a one shot kill on leopard. But the bullets are junk in my estimation. That one must have hit a twig, split in half and tumbled. Two entrance holes, i have both parts of tbe bullet. Chinkd of lung were hanging out of the bigger entrance hole which was about 1.5" x 3".

So one shot kill and some would say dead animal equals good performance. I say I was damned lucky and will never hunt Dangerous Game wity Hornady bullets again unless there is no other choice.

I still think there are good bullets that come out of that factory, but obviously their quality control leaves much to be desired. Even on what is supposed to be their premium line.

For elk, I'd shoot 300g Partitions or 300g A-Frames. They always expand and they always penetrate, at 2500 fps they will shoot more than flat enough out to 300 yards. The Remington Safari-Grade Ammo loaded with the 300g A-Frame below penetrated diagonally through a 900 lb brown bear starting at the right shoulder and ended up in the hide of the opposite rear thigh. It still weighed 299.5 grains.

Those Remington A Frame loads are my guns second favourite fodder;)

Do you load your own bullets? If so, I'd look at either North Fork bonded cores in 250gr. I have a load for those at about 2850fps. Or I'd look into where you could find Peregrine's all copper offerings.

If you need factory, then those Remington A-Frames would be my choice.

for elk, look at the sierra 300 gn boat tail.
it works well on donkeys.
bruce.

If you're going to use a 375HH go with Barnes 235g TSX or if you like heavy, use Barnes 350gTSX. I took several PG with the 235s and my buf with a 35o. One shot kills, 100% weight retention and good expansion.

NB,
Will you share your loads ?

AND PHIL, what powder are you using?

Thanks

Thanks Phil,
Like the North forks so will get after loads using H4895 with the 250. The 2800 FPS + is interesting.
Should be a great all around PG bullet, and useful in N. America on most, may want to go a bit heavier on big [Kodiak] bears. If only for the reason you dont always get the shot you want, so momentum comes into play.

That powder worked well with the 250gr TTSX too in my M70.

Luv2hunt,
My rifles are Win model 70s. For 375HH 24"bbl 235 g Barnes TSX I use 63 g of 4064. MV of 2593fps and energy of about 3200ft/lb. For 375HH 350 g Barnes TSX I use 58.2g 4064 for MV of 2250fps and energy of 3900ft/lb.

In my 7mm Rem mag 26"bbl 160g Barnes TSX I use 52.1g 4064 for MV of 2860fps and energy of 2900ft/lb.

These results may vary depending on bbl length and twist of your guns.

Newboomer I currently load a similar load with Speer 235's and 65gr Varget. That middle load range seems to work real well with the 235's (mine is also a M70)

Take a look at Nosler Accubonds in 260gr. or 300gr. I load a 300gr. Nosler Accubond in my 375 Ruger for elk hunting.

The only critter I have taken with my .375 to date is a whitetail. That 300gr. Partition at 2500 fps put it down so fast I thought it ran off.

As to Monometals - given my choice I'd go with an A-Frame, a partition or a cup & core (pending the critter). My experience with Mono's is that while yes, they do the job they also take their time doing it. I much prefer the effect of a partition or a decently made cup and core.

PS: at 300 yards on Elk, 10" of Drop at 300 with a 200 yard zero and it's a done deal. That's not that much different than an '06.

Good luck.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
