So after almost 20 months or so of planning and buying LOTS of rifles because, you know,...safari, I’m headed to IAH Terminal D to start on my trip to Tholo. I think I’m actually more nervous than excited and I can’t figure out why???

Many thanks to Charlie Austin for fining me tips and advise on my first time. Against his advice, I’m sure I over packed...

Good luck on your hunt! Pay particular attention to those trackers- both their eyesight and tracking skills- arguably the best in the world. Hope you're up to tracking eland in the Kalahari sand- IMO the best PG hunt in Africa!

And I'm sure others have advised on travel in Africa--- patience, patience, patience. Once in Maun all that will be behind. If driving down to area, may not be much traffic but watch for foraging donkeys and slow Kalahari Ferraris :)

Another virgin to Africa? Don’t go! You’ll never want to come home!
Just kidding! You’re going to have a grand adventure! Nothing to be nervous about if you practiced, practiced, practiced off sticks!
Any particular trophies you’re looking for?

DON’T GET ON THAT PLANE! Ridgewalker is right, you may not want to come home. Africa is that addictive.
Don’t be nervous. As long as you have all of your paperwork, you’re golden. Now just sit back and prepare for a great adventure. Be safe... shoot straight and yes... you did over pack.

Central Kalahari area weather looks clear, dry and pretty warm next couple weeks. Sunscreen and lots of water!

Seriously- hope you are successful in whatever you hunt and get to experience a real hunt for eland with those San trackers— just doesn’t get any better. No joke, you may have picked the No 1 destination, IMO, in all of Africa for your very first trip.

Tholo has an excellent reputation. I expect that you are going to have an excellent experience. That will undoubtedly cause you to return in the future. Another addict I predict. Have fun. Shoot straight and enjoy Africa.

If you have ANY room in your bags, please consider adding a few supplies for their new preschool/daycare. I dragged some stuff over a few weeks ago, and the kids were geeked. At the moment, they could use some very simple books because the children need to learn English to prepare for boarding school, but anything that supports learning the alphabet, reading English with pictures, and toys/games/activities that promote fine motor skills will be useful. Nothing that needs batteries, right? You picked the best place for your first adventure.

You will do a lot of tracking, but ask your PH about sitting in a blind over a waterhole one day, and ask for a couple sandwiches so you do not have to go back to camp for lunch. That is a fun way to hunt because you can see lots of wildlife up close, sometimes within a few feet, and eating in the blind gives you some extra hours of hunting time. Take a camera ...

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Wow, have a great time! I assume you are flying in to Maun. If so, take a few hours to do a flight seeing tour of the Okavango. You won’t regret it!

I agree with .458, a tracking hunt for eland in the Kalahari is one of the best hunts I have done.

I think you are referring the day school for the staff community there at Hqtrs. Excellent idea!! Here's a couple of their students :)
