Hello all. I've been reading over posts from this site for the past few months and finally decided it was time to join. I've not hunted Africa....yet....but am very appreciative the the massive amount of info all of you are able to share. I currently live in southern Maine (if any body has questions about Moose hunting up here I'd be happy to help) but I grew up in Pennsylvania and always enjoyed grouse and white tail hunting there. I'm looking forward to being a part of this community.

Welcome aboard Jonathan. We look forward to input from hunters of all stripes. Do you have any pictures and stories of Moose hunts that you'd like to share with us? What kind and caliber rifles do you own and or use? Do you reload?
I'd love to post about my most recent moose hunt and will do so once I'm at a place where I can upload a few pictures. My favorite rifle is my Remington 700 in .260 Remington caliber. Although I use a Rem 700 in .280 for moose. Recently though, I've toyed with the idea of picking up a 7mm rem mag. I like the ballistics of that caliber and the great history it has behind it.

I do enjoy reloading. I'm partial to Hornady but that's because I chose the color red instead of blue, green, orange...etc. Most of my reloading has been focused on pistol rounds (40 s&w, 9mm) as I tend to shoot pistol more but I do enjoy reloading rifle as well. I've not yet taken game with a reloaded cartridge but do have that as a goal.

Welcome to the forum! I haven't been here "officially" very long myself as I only joined after my first African hunt this June. I took a really nice bear up in northern Maine last year and will be flying into Portland in a few weeks with my 15 year old daughter to try to get her first and my second. Maine in the fall is a special place.

Welcome

If you have a 280, you have a 7mag without the recoil. If you want to step up, I'd probably get a 35 whelen or 300 winmag/wsm before a 7mag.

I always wanted to go to Maine and finally had the opportunity on our honeymoon. The soon to be mrs was a bit skeptical but Acadia and Bar Harbor won her over. (y)

I've been putting in for the Moose lotto. I understand I want to be in the extreme north or northwest. Are there any sleeper districts that may be easier to draw and has a good success on a decent bull?

Jonathan,
Welcome to AH! I have been to SA twice and would be glad to talk if you ever wish. I have a gun shop in Barrington, NH. Feel free to reach out & we can set up a time. It is worth going!

Thanks for the advice. To be more specific the "moose 280" is a borrowed rifle. If I did own one, however, I'd look past the .284 diameter and into the .30's. Toyed with the idea of a 35 whelen too. Man, guns are just plain fun.

Yeah, Maine is a beautiful state. Funny you mention Bar Harbor/ Acadia. My wife and I are headed up that way in a little over a week for a little R and R.

Keep putting in for the lottery. One of the nice things about being out of state is your ability to purchase extra chances to boost the number of times your name goes into the hat. A good district that does not get a lot of press is 7. It's located on the south west side of the state. The past four years somebody I know has taken good moose (800 lbs plus dressed weight) out of there. Last year I took a 1,150 lbs (on the hoof) 60' spread bull that scored 175 B&C, 377 SCI out of WMD 7. It's a pretty part of the state too and a shorter drive to get there.

The weather should be PERFECT for your hunt. The butcher I use tells me that he is already getting nice bear in. Should be a great time for you and your daughter. Enjoy the fresh air!

Thanks, I'll take a look at #7

I'm not sure if you've done the whole touristy thing at Bar Harbor before, so this may be old news. We really enjoyed sailing on the Alice E sloop with SailAcadia; it was my favorite part of the week.
Of course the whale watching was spectacular. I booked the first day and the last day (48 hour cancellation policy if I remember) - first day was canceled with high seas and we kept re-booking through the week and it kept getting canceled too. By the end of the week the tourist demand was so high they couldn't accommodate everyone the one day of the week they were able to go. Fortunately, I thought ahead and had that 2nd reservation (y)

We really enjoyed Sweet Pea's Cafe, went there several times. And of course the Jordan Pond House.

Have fun!

Nice “meeting” you Rick. I made my first trip to S. Africa this year through Kuche Safaris. We had an incredible time. What outfitter do you use? Neal
