Good Gun Deals This Week

Picking through the Guyette & Deeter auction catalogue; interesting lots:

lot 222: Chapuis double rifle in 30-06. Not sure that this is a particularly useful calibre/ rifle combination for anything other than a European driven game shoot. Note that although the rifle comes with Recknagel claw mounts, the 'scope is missing. Replacing that will be expensive - why do people do this? Cheap bugger. Est. $5,000 - $8,000

lot 370: Winchester pre-64 Model 70 Alaskan in .375 H&H Magnum. Americans seem to rate these rifles very highly. Est. $2,000- $3,000

lot 383: Remington Model 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum. Comes with a Zeiss 'scope which - ceteris paribus - is probably worth the same as the rifle (ie. either buy the rifle and get the 'scope for free, or buy the 'scope and get the rifle for free). Est. $600 - $900

Otherwise, it all looks rather expensive.

I dropped into Guyette and Deeter yesterday to look at some of the guns. When I told Jon Deeter that the estimate on the Remington 700 was low he said that if there is a reserve it is the low end of the estimate so it could go for more than the upper end.
He invited me to the pre-auction party the night before so I will mingle with the rich folks.
If anyone from AH is going please let me know. I have a house there.

I have another one for your consideration:
The store called it a "Dumoulin K98 St Hubert Europe in 375H&H" Asking price is 1200 EUR.

I would just get a Swaro Z6i 1-6x24 in claw mounts for it, and it would be perfect.

Love the thin barrel and I believe the wood to be nice too. Not a straight stock, the Germanic influence is there. But still as a working rifle, not a bad option I believe.

What do you think @rookhawk and @Red Leg ? And any others may chime in too of course.

The action on this rifle appears to be a Santa Barbara from Spain. Same as used on most Parker Hale models.

Yeah I’m starting to grow less enthusiastic as well… I’ll try and get some more photos.

I like the gun for $1200/1200EU. Quarter rib and crossbolts is a nice, nice plus.
The reasons its cheap are the mounts are installed backwards out of necessity to have that now very old/vintage scope fit in German Claws. If it were me, I’d immediately check to see if the mounts were screwed on or if they were braised on. If they are screwed on, I’d take the mounts off and the scope off, selling them away. I’d then just spend $500 on EAW pivot mounts that would screw right up into a 1-4x or 1-6x (or 1-8x) straight tube Swaro or S&B scope. It also needs a new cocking piece with a side-safety ($300) as part of the process. It looks like it had a CZ style safety on the side of the action at one point so I’d fill the stock inlet where that once was located as well.

Basically, you'll be into it $4200 to make it fully ready for safari with a 1-6x swaro, eaw rings, side safety, and a few other minor items. You may get $500 back selling the old scope and mounts.

I just ran across two 375 H&H, and one 458 Win Mag this weekend. One of the 275 was a Win 70 and the other was a Rem 700. The win mag was beat to crap, rusted, and the crown was messed up. The Rem 700 was better, not perfect, but better. The Rem 458 Win mag was at least taken care of, clean, looked like a late 70's or early 80's gun. I was staggered by the asking price for the rifles, they wanted 1995 for each of them. Is that the going price for DG rifles, even in bad condition?
Short answer absolutely not! You can find bolt action very good condition DG guns in the $1200-$1500 range…don’t fall for those prices in those conditions

For the gunsmiths among us:

I see that the safety is one of those sliding buttons on the side of the bolt. Would it be possible to replace this with a 3 position safety on the bolt? I notice a wood cut out in the stock, so that would remain I suppose...

Yes. Correct. And Yes. After the job is complete, you must/should fill in the gap in the stock where the safety once was on the stock. Occasionally, you need to replace the trigger as part of the overall exercise as well but its an easy task for any qualified smith.

For anyone who has wanted one of these lovely rifles. This is not a bad US price. The buttplate will need replacing or shaped, but that would not be difficult.
Didn’t last long! Rifles like this with the Porter Peep Sight are harder to come by. Nice little rifles, I need to get working on a load for mine!

Wonder how bad the blemishes are
would it matter at that price? Ok just seen the rest of the posts. Didnt know about this site as im over the pond

Thought I would post this. Maybe high for what it is…. Probably one of the cheapest 500 Jefferys you’ll ever see. Hopefully it feeds and functions properly..
