Good Gun Deals This Week

Stock cracks would scare me. Had one in my Rigby and ended up having to get a new hand carved one due to it.
Was gonna comment on that. It is concerning

But I can have a world class stock made out of exotic wood by a guy in Michigan for like $6k so be like new for under $10k

It does appear very minor and not recent. If you were going into it figuring on getting it restocked anyway, you could relieve a bit of the wood at the back of the tang and epoxy the crack and monitor it. A good effort would hardly be noticed and may save a few thousand on a new stock that would be unnecessary.

Absolutely, a new stock will most likely go on first.
I'd really take a close look at it first, or if you have a truly good gunsmith close by, have them evaluate it. It may not need it- unless of course you just want a flashier piece of wood, just show us pics when it's done! :ROFLMAO:

$4,428 sale price

Anybody here buy it?

I was the #2 bidder. Ran it up from below 3500 to 4403. The other bidder had a higher top bid that automatically kicked in when I bid.

I need a scope and prefer an older 404 over the newer ones. This rifle had been drilled and tapped. I would hate to buy a 100 year old rifle then drill out the action. (In fact I have one I won't drill out)

If anyone sees older 404j's come up feel free to tag me. It would be appreciated.

I though it might be you, looking at the bid history.

I think you guys did start a bidding war I could have gotten it much cheaper

Sorry about that. Didn't know another AH member was bidding or I would have let you have it.

Hope it works out great for you.

Haha I was willing to let you have it. I had put in a max bid yesterday and you almost hit it. If you want it I’ll let you have it. I just didn’t want a good deal to go by the way side.

No problem It's yours fair and square. Sorry I cost you an extra grand.

I think you are still in it for a good price. A rifle by an old line London manufacturer in 404j for under $5,000 is still a good deal in my book. I don't mean to step on toes here but I would much rather have the rifle you just bought over an AHR, Granite Mountain, Montana etc.

Do not do that!! There are at least a dozen stock makers in this country who can degrease and repair that crack so that it is completely invisible. Indeed it will be the strongest point on the stock. Have them bed it at the same time and reinforce the cross bolt. Again, a competent stock specialist can do this with no outward show of work. Even the best will do it for a fraction of the cost of a new stock and you will still have the original rifle.
