I had never hunted in Saarland. it is only about 20 miles away. I have been fortunate enough to hunt in Saxony, Rheinland Pfalz, Hessen and Bavaria. Mostly through hunts I have booked through outfitters or hunts on military bases, or occasionally when I am invited.
Anyway last night I got too spend my first hunting day ever with my middle daughter. She finally decided that this hunting was something she needed to try.
So I ordered her green hunting pants and a mostly matching set of T-shirts for us from Amazon.
We made the obligatory trip to Frankonia to pick up a Butelo call in hopes of catching some rut activity. Unfortunately there was none. Every roe deer we honked at ran like the dickens.
We started the night out with a fox working hard to kill everything it could in the field. I am fairly certain it was a female fox with older puppies or a 1 year old fox. It was very thin, and not very big. Foxes opened up August 1st same as Badgers, but I gave it at pass at 150 meters thinking I would rather shoot a buck.
We had a mother roe deer and her two kids in front of us at about 150 for most of the evening. They had a safe shot, but I didn't think my 13 year olds first view of a kill should be something that looked more like Bambi's mother than a buck.
I had an older buck with a gray face dead to rights at 67 meters. I didn't like the back stop, as there was a building about 500 meters behind the buck and I gave him a wait. I had about 30 opportunities to kill him where he was but I don't need any more drama in my life than a deflected shot could provide. So I didn't shoot.
He had pearling (trash) but was realistically a single pointer on the left and a 2 pointer on the right. Gray face, probably an older buck going down hill. Maybe 7 or8.
Here's the photos.
Didn't shoot anything but a nice night.
Hunting in suburban Germany is sure different than hunting in Slovenia. Too many people in germany. Lucky for us we only saw one bike rider.
The buck is on the left side in this photo. Not sure how visible he is.
The mama and her kids were here. In the same spot as the earlier fox. My partner hunting in adjacent high seat shot at the fox and missed.
About 5 miles north of the French Border. Pfalzerwald Forest in the background.
