After a short hop over to Barcelona we started the enjoyable journey up into the Pyrenees crossing into France in time for a wonderful French dinner and red wine.We spotted a beautiful red stag on the way and all was looking good for the start of our hunt.Fran from Corju hunting a ,Spanish outfitter and good friend , had arranged a chamois hunt for Ross (Buck 270) and I and if I was successful the possibility of a mouflon was on the cards. My limited vocabulary cannot describe the beauty of the mountains, simply stunning. It was elected that I would take the hardest hunt on the very top of the peaks.
I would like to regale you with a mountain tale of hardship and sweat, however, we spotted a chamois from the truck on the drive up and we got out to have a look. The chamois was stood behind a bush and we couldn't see if he was a good one.My guide crawled 20 yards to the right and suddenly got very excited, it was a good one, a very good one.I ranged the animal at 157 yards at squeezed.I felt conflicted taking the Chamois so easily but I have had a few hunts this year when I hunted hard and didn't connect. When Diana smiles upon you I suppose.Ross was also successful in his hunt but that's his story to tell and was a lot harder than mine!
The following day saw us hard on the trail at first light as we were in pursuit of a mouflon, I have taken a nice mouflon in the past so was interested in a better animal. It was a with a bit of huff and puff that we found ourselves high up on the side of a mountain with mouflon ,chamois and red stage above us.There was 2 good rams amongst the herd and we spooked them onto and over the ridge. One good ram stood long enough for us to get into position and we settled down for the long shot.He was ranged at 323 meters and after regulating my breathing squeezed the trigger. He ran 30 yards or so and with great relief dropped and rolled down the hill.We was very lucky as we was told that if I had missed we wouldn't get another crack at them.We had a wonderful rustic hunt and was well looked after during the whole trip VIVE LA FRANCE!
