France bans imports of lion hunt trophies

Officials told to stop issuing import permits for lion heads, paws and skins, while country considers stricter controls on other species

France has banned the import of lion heads, paws and skins as hunters’ trophies, nearly four months after the killing of Zimbabwe’s most famous lion by an American trophy hunter sparked international outrage.

In a letter to the actor and animals rights activist Brigitte Bardot, France’s environment minister, Ségolène Royal, said that she had instructed officials to stop issuing permits for lion trophies and was considering stricter controls on trophies from other species.

“Following your letter and recent visits in Africa in preparation of the climate summit in Paris, I want to let you know I have given orders to my services to stop delivering certificates for importing lion trophies,” Royal wrote in the letter dated 12 November.

“Concerning other species trophies, I am in favour of a much stronger control for hunting trophies and this issue will be discussed with all the countries concerned and with the EU.”

In July, conservationists and MEPs called for an EU-wide ban on the import of lion trophies following the death of Cecil the lion at the hands of a Minnesotan dentist near one of Zimbabwe’s national parks. France is the first EU state to implement such a ban. In March, Australia also banned their import.

Between 2010 and the 2013, the last year for which data is available, more than 100 such lion trophies were imported to France.

Lionaid, a UK-based charity that is calling for the UK to follow suit with a ban on lion trophy imports, said it was “overjoyed” by the move.

A spokeswoman said: “Within the EU, France was a major importer of such trophies and we expect that wild lions will now find themselves safer without the presence of French trophy hunters.

“We trust that France’s decision will create a domino effect within the EU and that we will soon hear about other member states joining together to say no [to trophies].”

Catherine Bearder, a Liberal Democrat MEP who led calls for a ban in the summer, said was “delighted” by France’s decision and the UK should follow its lead.

The EU’s scientific review group, which decides whether or not to blacklist trophy imports based on the sustainability of species, met in September and approved the continued import of lion trophies from Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

Last month, scientists warned that lion numbers in central and western Africa are likely to halve in the next two decades due to loss of habitat and prey.

Bloody hell whats next !!!

What's next? The loss of habitat and prey will accelerate because nobody has an interest in looking after the lions, that's what's next.

Idiots.

I'm ashamed to say it was an Australian politician that started this trend, hopefully he'll be booted out soon.

You can still hunt them.

Email from JAGD & HUND 2016

JAGD & HUND 2016, Europe’s largest hunting exhibition is getting closer and you will participate as an exhibitor. Jointly with you, we look forward to this event which will certainly be a success again.

In our capacity as international exhibition organiser, we also regard it as our task to point out to you specific ethical views on certain hunting topics. Today, for example, we write to you in connection with Captive Bred Lions and Artificial Breeding – of course only in the event that these topics concern you. Some sensitivity has recently developed among the German public when it comes to certain hunting practices where animals are bred for the purpose of being shot.

Regardless of the views on such topics in your home country, we want to draw your attention to the fact that trips abroad, during which such methods are used, result in protests and negative media reporting in Germany. We therefore ask you in your own interest to refrain from offering such ethically questionable trips at JAGD & HUND. In our capacity as exhibition organiser, we also appreciate a self-restraint to this effect for 2016. As a matter of precaution, we point out to you that we intend to have an amendment of the Exhibition Terms & Conditions under this aspect for the following years legally checked.

The initially voluntary self-restraint is also in the interest of the vendors concerned and their countries of origin because it is the precondition for a predominantly non-hunting society to be prepared to continue to at least accept sustainable hunting in the future.

We hope for a JAGD & HUND 2016 exhibition that focuses on a responsible, professional exchange of information on hunting topics. We want to offer you as an exhibitor the best possible general conditions and a smooth, undisturbed exhibition. Feel welcome at JAGD & HUND 2016!

Blow after Blow. No market no Lion! They will have to show their kids the mounted Lions and not wild ones if it goes on like this........

Oh no... that´s bad news for all living in Europe.... in a few years we have to take all measurements when shooting a lion, so we can print him on a 3D-printer at home...

Damn shame how liberals are winning time after time. Guess SCI we all know who they are right?, must be doing a hell of a job fighting for us.....:ROFLMAO:

I thought Brigitte Bardot was long gone. Still being a pain in the ass at 80.

"..all is not well in Bardotland. Having lived for decades as a recluse in her two properties in St Tropez, unable to go out without being harassed by fans and paparazzi, she has developed, says her biographer, "a rather distorted view of the world", concentrating only on her foundation for the protection and welfare of animals. Opposed to what she sees as the inherent cruelty of the halal process in killing animals, she has made anti-Muslim comments for which she was condemned by French courts and made to pay hefty fines. Between 1997 and 2008 she faced French judges five times for "incitement to racial hatred". On the last occasion she received a €15,000 fine. ......"

She need to get refocused on baby seals. Oh yeah, that just hurts the Canadian Innuit people.

NO MORE CECILS

We have just been informed that LionAid have secured a Debate in the UK Parliament, calling for the UK to reject any further involvement in either canned hunting or trophy hunting of wild lions for sport.

david-jones-mp-1447934135.png
We are delighted that that the Rt Hon David Jones MP , pictured left, will deliver this Adjournment Debate in Westminster Hall on the 24th November at 4pm.

We now need everyone in the UK who was horrified by the slaying of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe to contact their MP as soon as possible, urging attendance at this important Debate. Let your MP know that this is an important matter for you and you would like your MP to represent you at the Debate, urging a cessation of any further lion trophy imports into the UK.

You can find your MP here

There is not much time as the Debate is this coming Tuesday but if you contact your MP as soon as possible by phone or email, you CAN make sure that your MP attends this Debate.

Just two days ago, France became the first EU Member State and the second world nation (after Australia) to ban the import of lion trophies. Let us work now to convince the UK Government to bring in a ban to match that of France.
Indeed, Grant Shapps was quoted as saying that Cecil's death was barbaric and that the UK were keen to outlaw such practices. Now is the time for all the MPs that represent you all to be in Westminster Hall on Tuesday at 4pm and add their condemnation of lion trophies being allowed into the UK.

On Friday next week, the UK Premiere of Blood Lions will be screened at the Royal Geographical Society. This documentary shows in dramatic detail the hideous industry of canned lion hunting. It shocks everyone who sees it.
Let us now seize the initiative and make every effort to convince the UK to do the honourable thing and BAN ALL FURTHER IMPORTS OF LION TROPHIES ONTO UK SOIL.

LionAid will, of course, be in attendance at the Debate on Tuesday and we hope that with your help now, we can make sure that very many MPS attend and make their voices heard.

Brigitte Bardot was a pretty model and actor:K Love Eyes:, but a lot of empty space between the ears.:K Tongue:

Where are all of the hunting organizations who are supposed to be fighting things like this at?

UNT2007, nothing is being done anymore, we are leaving everything up to fate and the economy and whoever has the power. Society has changed from hunter/gather to computer/desk jockey where we don't get our hands dirty and forget how food gets to the table.

I was wondering what was being done to fight this. All I hear is doom and gloom and inevitable defeat. Why don't we quit beating up on SCI and other organizations about what they are or are not doing. I haven't been happy with SCI's lackluster response either but maybe we need to give them the members and support they need to counter the anti hunting organizations.

I think it is important to note in the lionaid article that they start off talking about a "canned lion hunting" ban and quickly transition to calling for a ban on all sport lion hunting. We need to be sure and keep this mindset in our thoughts as we debate each other about captive bred lion hunting vs wild lion hunting. The antis don't care which type of lion hunting you are talking about, it is all the same to them and they want it all banned. Just like trophy hunting and poaching are the same in their eyes. While ethical debates are imortant in our sport, we need to be careful not turn against one another. As fellow sportsman and conservationists, we need to be sure we stick together and focus on protecting our rights and heritage as well as the long term viability of the animals that we care about rather than infighting amongst ourselves.

You would think that France has more important things to do like national security as opposed to idiotic bans.

Not sure of how this process will effectively get off the ground etc, BUT I agree that we ALL have to stand together and get SOLIDARITY against all these anti's that are slowly but surely winning the fight to destroy hunting and firearm ownership. IF it means MORE membership at the various hunting institutions then let's recruit. More active involvement from the members, then let's get more active ( PROACTIVE) and take these issues on before/ during the anti antics... rather than wait for them to "win a case" and then react??

safari club in my opinion looks out for the click that run it and the hell with the plain member who pays his dues.what they get is for themselves and we get grandfathered in.ive asked them for assistance several times and got nothing but well look into it or we have to check with legal.BULL SHIT!!!!and for those who ask,why are you still a member, the magazine, and thats about to end.its turned into a glossy field and stream and the new Yorker.one or two african hunts only.used to be that was what it was all about.glad im 77,wont have to put up with this bullshit much longer.
