Thanks. Good news is the blem on left side does not go all the way through to magazine well. So the stock is probably structurally sound enough. This was a bit of concern because that is the thinnest and weakest area of stock where it is most susceptible to flexing and cracking. This can be prevented by adding crossbolts. I picked up a nice used stock for my Mauser build project on an internet auction site. It had no crossbolts and cracks had started ahead of and behind the magazine well. I added two Winchester crossbolts and a lot of JB Weld bedding. So far the stock has held up to some pretty severe 404J punishment with no ill effect.

Your stock does appear to have light inletting for a trigger blocking safety on top although I don't see that it's been opened up enough internally for the mechanism. My stock had been outfitted for trigger block safety but I had already installed a striker Model 70 style safety. I took care of the stock issues with some sanding (to remove safety lever notch) and colored epoxy (to fill internal pocket). This stock will work with either style safety ... although either will require some modification to the stock (which is to be expected). No one should expect this to be a "drop in" affair. Given the character of wood, I think this is a good buy. I should take it as the stock on my 404 is a bit short for me. But my bank account is more than a bit short right now having just returned from my fifth safari.
