Flat Skin Tanning Cost - Wildebeest/Nyala

I just got a quote back from Trophy Solutions for euro skulls and flat skins and noted while most seem reasonable, they must be charging by the square foot for Blue Wildebeest and Nyala. Its quite frankly bordering on outrageous (~$510 for Wildebeest, $350 for Nyala) - does anyone have a reference on what they paid for tanning on either of these? I think the number is off as I had a flat skin done of a mature bull elk last year here in the states, and in came in between the two of these, and they are considerably larger.

I guess prices have doubled in ten years. Waterbuck back in 2017 was $220 and Zebra $280 with felt backing.

How bad do you want the trophy? With the cost of a trip these days, personally I am not going to worry about a couple hundred bucks.

Their current pricelist has wildebeest backskins at $550 and nyala at $250

My US taxidermist just sent my blue wildebeest flat skin off to the tannery, the charge by the square foot in the US to tan and my price is around $600 for tanning

I think I paid about $500 for the zebra skin in my avatar in 2024, Trophy Pro South Africa. Maybe 1100 for the cape buffalo hide.

I would always get rugs etc done in Africa. US taxidermist charge way more (in my small experience) for rugs

I got a quote recently for $200 and $180, respectively. Granted, I have not used them yet so I don’t know what their quality looks like.

Thanks, seems like its ballpark then. Kind of surprised - the place I used here was Wildlife Gallery, which is not known for being cheap. It is a very nice wildebeest skin and my first animal, so will go through with it. Not doing a rug as we prefer them as flats or doing it ourselves. Will probably be a little more picky next time about the skins we bring back though.

Plus you are paying an added dip and pack fee. I always have flat skins tanned in South Africa and Namibia if I want them.

No clue on the quality of their work.

Just received a tanned blue wildebeest hide from my 2025 trip, cost was $320 so 2025 pricing, no backing on it. Marakalalo did mine.

I didn’t end up getting a wildebeest but to compare I paid $681 for my zebra and $2,300 for my giraffe full skins.

I got quoted $700 on a zebra skin. Was going to do 2 pillows for the wife but with the total cost and a puppy in thr house I wasnt sure I could stomach $866 for 2 pillows.

If so, it makes since. I’ve used the Wildlife Gallery and their work was very good but pricey.
