Frankly, when I first read your post, I thought you were regaling us with you McGiver like skills. To me, it came across a little patronizing and construed given the experience of the members here, and most any game farm I’ve been on in the RSA is pretty self sufficient, in terms of having tools like a large C clamp or loaner rifle. Using a tourniquet to fix your rifle is certainly a first for me. I see now that was not your intent, but just how I read your post.

How did the rest of your hunt go? Do you know where you’d like to hunt next?

Thanks, 318AE. I'm surprised it was read that way as I confessed my goof before I described the field repair. I learn tips and hacks from all kinds of sources, and I relay them in turn; one never knows who will find what useful.

Regarding rifle repairs in the field, in my belt pouch I've a stubby screwdriver with all the Torx, Allen, and screwhead bits needed for whatever rifle I'm carrying. Also, a broken shell extractor.

I was in camp that year for 10 weeks to work and help out in client hunts. In between I harvested any game we needed for the camp table, plus a few PG trophies of my own within a reserved block of 1,000 acres. Afterward, I rented a car for 2 weeks and toured about a third of RSA. (I did the same the previous year, but only for 4 weeks in camp.) Visited a friend's sugar cane farm to thin out their baboon infestation. It was a grand summer. I'd like to part-time live in Africa, to hunt and fly. If a large game farm needs a gyrocopter or bush pilot for game inventory, client flights, etc. I'd be keen!

You're quite welcome. I could have merely posted how I McGiver-straightened a generically bent scope tube, but there were other useful elements to the story. I don't mind mess-up/fess-up accountability. After a certain age, life is mostly refinement.

The more you deflect this away from you the more I think your trackers dropped the rifle between range and you shooting. This makes a better book chapter however than going to the store and buying a temporary replacement scope or admitting improper packing.

1) There was no "deflection". (And from what?)
2) Nobody else carried that rifle.
3) It happened a year after my book was published.
4) The case and packing should have been sufficient, though I now remove scopes before transit.

All this because I personally don’t see how a scope gets bent inside a hard travel case, and because I think it’s hilarious to assume a bullseye when the gun was actually off by multiple feet.

However, when you have actually taken business risks in life, and succeeded even modestly, then you'll come across as an adult. Your sneering extends beyond merely the bent scope story, but to my over 30 years of writing and publishing. It's a baffling obsession you have with me, but futile. Kid, I'm straight and I'm married.

Attending one of Clint Smith's Thunder Ranch Texas handgun courses in the 1990s, he introduced a new doctrine of not ejecting a Glock's live round into the hand. They'd seen it 3x strike the ejector and fire during ejection. (Very exciting.) "When we've seen something odd happen three times, we mention it in our lessons."

I read an reread this post looking for the humor one poster spoke of and maybe it is me for I can’t find it. I do appreciate the tips on packing my rifles and understand why to do it that way. I also have done it wrong on occasion and thankfully didn’t have a problem. The trick on the scope was just genius and happy you posted it.
