My son inherted a 7 x 61 Sharpe and Hart, a Shulz and Larsen made in Denmark from his grandpa dating from the 1960's. I grew up in the '70's in South Africa and devoured Dr Lucas Potgieter's articles, " Die Boer en sy Roer" (The Boer and his Gun) on hunting and rifles. I remember his reference to the " hell-ted belted " calibers and believe the 7x 61 was one of the first. Shulz and Larsen discontinued the 7x 61 with the rise of the cheaper American 7 mm's. Fortunately my son inherited around 800 Norma rounds, some brass and reloading dies. It would be interesting if some of the older guys had some experience with the 7x61. For interest' sake I add some images and ballistics.

From left to right: 375 H&H, 7x61 Super, 9.3 x 62 Mauser and .270 Winchester. Cartridges I own for comparison not necessarily competitors.

Still an accurate shooter @ 100 yards. Sonny needs to adjust his scope setting but says he knows where to aim when hunting.

Right 375 H&H CZ 550 compared to Schulz and Larsen 7 x 61 also controlled feed action marginally shorter than the CZ 550 magnum action. Note the gas ports in the action. Very smooth action as well.

@CZ550
THE 7X51 S&H was a caliber I fell in love with as a kid as well as a few others like the 348.
It will do everything the 7mmRM will do and the Schultz and Larson was a highly regarded rifle in its day. Even Roy Weatherby had some of his early rifles built by them for his magnum calibers.

Going back to the early 60s, a friend had one. I remember it had a bit more recoil than my ‘06, but was very flat shooting. Hitting hat sized rocks across a wide canyon was easy from a sitting position. I think the rifle was a Schulz & Larson. I remember it was pretty.

The 404 Jeffery I built some time back was the second build on that FN Colombian action the first of which was the 7x61 Schulz & Hart. Built by Bill Marden in Australia in the 70's as the most efficient of the current 7mm mags at the time. It was already almost obsolete but I got Bill to make me a set of loading dies and I originally had a few boxes of factory ammo then reformed the rem mag brass. A thousand rounds throught it on paper and deer but eventually went for the 7x57 (a few of them) and the 7x61 became the 404 jeffery.
I ran the 160gn Sierra's over 4320 for 2900fps and very good accuracy.

Looking for shipping advice. I will be hunting in Limpopo in March, and was wanting to know a general idea of shipping costs to return my mounts to the US when completed. Air or sea? Only plains game hunting.

Good morning 7MAG. I have a NEW, never mounted, Leupold M8-4X Extended Eye Relief scope that I will sell you for $325 shipped to you. I was a Leupold rep for 12 years and this was always our preferred mounting for a lever gun, scout rifle style.

You’ve got an interesting screen name. Will the Thrill provided lots of great times for me as a lifelong Giants fan. Even though I never met him, a number of buddies either duck hunted or shared a dugout with him. He’s a great guy according to those guys. Cool screen name and if that’s your real name, it’s a great one.
