Fireplaces & Firewood

Thats what I miss about Mo. and Ark. ,all the variety of trees ,that and the price of gasoline.
Out west we have an extremely hard wood called mountain mahogany, it mostly grows on north face up canyons. It is so hard you can split it with 1 swing. It definetly heats you 3 times before it ever goes in the stove. Doesn't get over about 12 -15 feet and is knarly and twisty, ,also has a poison that causes your splinters to infect and fester quickly. But burns great.
My experience with cotton wood and elm is it burns like wet toilet paper. Once when I lived on the north coast of CA. I had no wood so I drove to the lost coast beach and loaded up on drift wood ,lots of redwood and about every other kind the ocean carries in currents, but it was hardly wort the effort.

Well, the new wood seems to be working as intended!

'tis the season and all that!

Expect it's a bit colder and snowier in these parts than in yours though.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
