This pretty much sums up society for me and its political ramifications. It’s why I detest plastic guns and their aficionados as it has so many underpinnings that are both irrational and contemptible. Some of the straw man arguments:

1.) I don’t want to scratch up a good gun. (As they buy a plastic gun that costs more)
2.) I can’t afford a hand finished gun. (As they spend a fortune on disposable items, have no ability to save, and cannot manage impulse control in their daily spending)
3.) The new technology is better. (As they buy the cheapest possible mass produced designs and then festoon it with hundreds of dollars in nonsense accessories)
4.) I want something for the end of the world as we know it. (While they are dying of COPD and imagine defending themselves in an environment where they cannot provide power/food/safety on their own land but they own a tactical armada believing that gun is all their gonna need to be king of the dystopia)
5.) Hand made things are old-timey and only boomers and X-ers care about anything of any long-term worth. (as they squander their life leasing and renting everything possible, then buying disposable items in the remainder)
6.) By buying cheaper guns I have more money left over for hunting. (As they book cull hunts, helicopter hunts, and any other hunt that focuses on mass slaughter with no aesthetic or challenge as a focus)
7.) The plastic guns are all I need to get my own food. (As they process and throw away countless game a year because they can’t cook or won’t eat anything not sold at burger world)
8.) My gunsmith says they are better. (As they talk to a kid that makes guns from parts in the mail with zero hours training, completely dismissing the masters of their craft that spent a lifetime building things of beauty and function)
9.) I only buy plastic guns because wood guns are uppity and upper class. (While they buck social hierarchies in all areas of their life and never attain any form of meaningful work, nor attract a woman of any social status)
10.) I can upgrade my plastic guns anytime I want whereas the wood ones do not assemble like legos. (While trying to do the same thing to disastrous results in all areas of their life such as upgrading their Jeep until it no longer runs, their glock until it no longer fires reliably, and their country until every agency is a socialist mess that is too big to fail)
11.) Fancy guns take too long to locate and research whereas my FN SCAR and HK556 is available at the local gunshop. (While they fund such impulses by selling off grandma’s holocaust ring and pawning the ancestral silverware at the cash-into-gold place in the stripmall impulsively)

Some of the many attributes of the plastic gun movement for your political amusement this morning.

Agreed, they appeal to a certain sector for a reason.

That’s how I feel about labradoodles.

Is that a real dog? Just to clarify, I have some plastic and metal carry guns also. Not added any sinks or bidets to them either. Just not easy to carry my Chapuis or Kreighoff double under my tee shirt in the summer!

Depends. Do you have photographs of your power drill on your phone? Do you have friends come over to admire your hammer collection? Do you post online about saving up to buy more barbed wire for your property?

You don't? Why? Because they are irrelevant tools that fulfill their purpose and are thrown away when their utility is finished. Nothing there to stir a well-adjusted human's soul.

But why do people have pictures of their glock collection on their phone? Why do they post about saving to have it stippled by a kid down the road? Why do they post pictures of their titanium pin upgrade kit?

As a member of the generation accused, I will admit I have some plastic guns. And I also feel that every free man should own a so called “assault rifle”.
Most of my friends have a POS 22 Rimfire that I would not give $50 for.
Most of my friends have a latest and greatest fully camouflaged semiautomatic shotgun. I hate these as they turn white and look like hell after five years of use. I want mine to last a lifetime.
Most of my friends have a cheap center fire rifle such as a ruger American savage axis, etc. I dislike these for a number of reasons, especially when a push feed model 70 can be bought for the same money.
Lastly I will add that the so called “assault weapons” can in fact be a good investment, if you buy PRE BANS that is very important. In the five years I have watched them HK91 have increased in value by $1000-1500. Action Arms Galils are very much the same.
If you look in my cabinet you find some of everything including model 12s model 70s Ruger 77s, the few soulless plastic pieces have to live in a different place.

Well everyone has their thoughts on this subject and being this is an African hunting forum most can assume how people feel about the subject.

Yes I'm one of those that can afford a nice double and choose a plastic R8. It makes no sense to me to mess up a nice piece of wood or worry about it getting messed up if something happens and I take a spill.

I am also one of those that can not justify spending the most on a rifle, only to have it not be the most accurate. For myself reliability and accuracy trumps looks.

If we are talking about the black rifles, you may or may not want to admit it (that is up to each individual). They are a tool for a job, maybe it is three gun, maybe it is hunting, maybe it is protection. I much rather have my little black rifle when something goes bump in the night than my 458Lott. I'm not going to tape or figure out how to mount and IR laser or lights to another platform when the best one already exists.

I'm not sure why it is a big deal one way or the other, we have people that are taking part in the 2nd Amendment. That in itself is a win. If you want to try to sway them to the woodside go for it. Again just my opinion, 2A support is a good thing even if the gun of choice is not your cup of coffee.

I never wanted an AR until my government told me I wasn’t allowed to have one, and I have to say that planning a build has been fun. But I do believe it will be a one and done venture, as my love of walnut runs deep.

But I don’t think we should be looking down our noses at those who like plastic guns. It is better to have more shooters in our fraternity with a wide variety of options to fit their tastes and budgets, and a cheap plastic gun just might be a great introduction for a teen or young adult from which they can build upon their knowledge and grow.

There's an old saying about living too long. Eventually, it affects everyone.

Do you remember a film called The Day of the Jackal? I think he used a rifle disguised as a crutch. This picture reminds me of that.

If I was the Jackal I would have had a heck of a time diguising my wood-stocked rifle as a crutch. ;)

IMHO, there should be balance, and every gun whether plastic or with a beautiful wood stock have a place in our life. I own several plastic rifles, shotguns, and pistols and they serve their purpose. I also own several rifles and shotguns with a beautiful wood stock, and they also serve their purpose.

Now, doing this to a lever rifle should be punishable by castration.

That looks like a useless piece of crap, looks like some one threw down a bunch of gun pieces and a 4 year old used a third of them to make a toy.

A soulless product for a soulless generation.
indeed.
But the problem is following.
Type in google "best deer rifles 2023", or "2022", etc...
You will get at least 80-100% of souless rifles on the screen, as described.
It becomes epidemic.

Each year, I do this google search, and each year I get disappointed. Nothing for me to get me interested.

The last pleasant surprise for me (not a rifle) was colt python back in production, and Springfield armory new HP 35.
The next best surprise is when I see classic rifle of my favorite type still in production for this year (ie - not phased out)

Living life like a lion for 1 day is better than living life like a jackal for 100 years.
