Not so much a hunt report as an outing report and I am posting this as it is rather unusual and something different. I was out this evening with two friends in my concession in North Rhein Westfalia Germany - 1.000 h near the Dutch border - being a high seat hunt for European boar. Fox and badger are also in season and I told my two friends that foxes are to be shot on site and badger can be taken if they want one. Long story short, at 1 degree C and just before midnight, Kris shot a heavy badger with his Drilling using the `small caliber` being 5,5x52R. The badger did not take a step and weighed in at 10,5 kgs.

Whilst badger may not be hunted in the UK and many other European countries, they are open in Germany from 01.09 to 31.12 and with some 30-40 confirmed sightings in our concession, we can easily take out 4 or 5 every year.

Kris is taking the badger to the butchers tomorrow and will have the quarters smoked as hams and the filets and rest made in to salami. The pelt will be tanned with the fur on and will go into his trophy room. I have eaten badger ham many times before and will do so again! Tasty, slightly nutty.

European badger (IUCN Conservation Status - Least Concern (LC)), something different and a worthy animal to take as a trophy and also for the table! Certainly in Germany!

Cheers,

Charlie

I was surprised at the part about eating them. The badgers we have in the USA are stinky and I can’t imagine eating one!
Good for you using as much as possible from your game

Fur makes expensive paint brushes, too.

Excellent eating not that I ever shot one in the UK ..... roadkill mostly

Congrats to the Hunter! Also I appreciate its use as a food animal. I’ll try eating anything once and would happy to have the opportunity to try some badger!

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
