Ernst Steigleder pre-war 8x60mmS sporting rifle. Chamber cast shows a bore dia of .314", and groove of .323". The 22" barrel is octagon to round with a full length integral rib. Action has German claw mounts, double set triggers. Note the engraving on the action and bottom metal/floor plate. There are many small touches that really set things off; notably the front ring being narrowed slightly to provide a slimmer stock, and the shaping on the trigger bow area. Previously owned by Aaron Little the custom gun maker...was his hunting rifle. Dies and brass included. $2500 plus shipping to your FFL.

Yes indeed. That quality today would hurt your bank account.

Interesting question...check out the last lines of this description....

Would this be closer to 30:06 or .300 H&H ?

In terms of performance, the cartridge 8x60S is slightly over the cartridge 8x57IS and therefore in the range of the cartridge 30-06 Springfield. There was once a so-called Magnum-Bombe, but its performance was not comparable to what we understand by Magnum. The data of this cartridge stated by DWM could never be verified. Despite everything, the cartridge 8x60S is a good hunting cartridge.

The Magnum-Bombe.

The 8x60S is closer to the .30-06 than the .300 H&H. It has a interesting history, and is a very effective cartridge in terms of velocity achieved for a given bullet weight out of the 60mm long case. From a 24” barrel you can easily get 2750fps with a 180gr bullet, and about 2620fps with a 196gr bullet.

There are some lovely factory rifles chambered for it in Brno ZG47, Mod21&22 as well as by FN. Then of course there are often rifles like this one floating around, built by numerous smaller German makers between the wars, for the sporting market after the 8x57 was not allowed for civilian use after the treaty of Versailles.

For hunting, the cartridge offers no advantages compared to the cartridge 8x57IS. The cartridge 8x60S was used only as a replacement for the latter but was quickly leave in favor to the cartridge 8x57IS. In France, many sport shooters used the cartridges 8x60S until recently in modified military rifles because of the law regarding military cartridges.

Beautiful workmanship! Contemplating cutting such a barrel, but this one has a few special nuances - very nice indeed!
Best wishes on the sale to some lucky person!

After WWI, the 8x60 was developed because it wasn't a militarty cartridge and therefroe new rifles in this caliber were not restricted by the Treaty of Versailles. It was not intended to be a magimum cartridge, just a cartridge non-restricted 8mm cartridge that fit Mauser actions. It is a good cartridge, similar to the 8x57 which is also a fine cartridge.

Green Chile,
I may have missed it but how is the bore?
It is a very nice looking gun.

Thanks for your interest. Excellent bore and was the favorite hunting rifle of a builder who is very particular.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
