I have a legal pair of pre 1975 elephant tusks I would like to sell . Does any one know who I can approach or is any one interested in buying them . I have spoken to c.i.t.e.s and a few government organizations , they can help me with all the legal steps ( which I have taken ) but they cant tell me who to sell them too . I understand that ivory is quite a touchy subject but on the other hand I do know that there is a market for them .
Any advise and help wold be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gordon

    Sure .
My father when he was alot younger towards the end of the 1950's he spent alot of time in Tanganyika.
While he was there he did quite a bit of hunting . We have this pair of stunning tusks that we would like to sell now but they must go to some one who appreciates them .
They measure 133cm and 138 cm , They weigh 9.5 kg and 9.7 kg . permit #3650 dated on 22/5/2014.
Any other info let me know and I will mail you what you want .

    Gordon,

    Welcome to AH.

I'm not sure where you are located. If it is the USA, then Lolli Bros. has taxidermy sales periodically. You might contact them. They used to sell ivory. I presume they still do. Around 8 years ago ivory was selling in the range of $120-150 per pound. I have heard it has gone up quite a bit since then but that is only third hand info.

I no longer get Safari Magazine. (You have to be a member of SCI to receive it) There used to be an advertisement in the back in every issue of a guy who bought ivory. You might check that out.

What part of Tanganyika did your father live in?

    Hope this helps.

Yeah they really are beautiful .
Thanks Wheels . I am in South Africa but I will esquire about the Safari Magazine . The price has gone up quite a bit a guy in Hong Kong told me about $220 upwards per pound . To tell you guys one of the main reasons I am selling them is that I have always been interested in hunting and I would love to start up a gun and bow collection for my son and I to "play" with . We both love nature and conservation and I know that hunting brings in large money for South African conservation as well as educates people .
I have always have loved all the old stories my dad tells us of those times and would enjoy to create those memories with my son.
Wheels I am not sure what area he was in , It is in the old hunting permit which is stored away . He was a geologist and did alot of work for De beers in that area . so I assume it was all over . I know they owned an old bush pub up there.

    Gordon,

Didn't realize you were in RSA. Not sure if you can sell the ivory outside of RSA. Be very careful before looking down this road. The buyer with the add in Safari Magazine is a USA guy and so is Lolli Bros.

The Williamson mine up by Lake Victoria is the only diamond mine I am familiar with in Tanzania. I think DeBeers owned it around those days. Of course if he was exploring he could have been anywhere.

The tusks or at least one of them will probably have been stamped with a die. There will probably be two letters followed by two numbers followed by more numbers. The two letters will be the region the elephant was taken in. ie: IR for the Iringa region, MB for the Mbeya region. The first two numbers will probably be the year the elephant was taken. ie: If the two numbers are 58 it would mean it was taken in 1958. The numbers following that will be the numbers in order of the tusks registered in that region that year. ie: If your fathers tusks were the 67th and 68th checked into the Iringa region in 1958, the die stamps on the tusks would read: IR 58 67 on one tusk. The second would read IR 58 68. This might be able to help you understand the stampings.

Spending time hunting with your son........priceless!(y)

Under international regulations, tusks can only be legally sold if: The elephant they belonged to was taken from the wild before July 3, 1975.

I don't know if this will help. In the classified section of the new issue of Hunting Report.
It says African Elephant Ivory bought and sold. Tele: 508-746-8552, Alan Zanotti.

Does this mean if a guy were to have taken an elephant in the last few decades, but now wants to sell the trophies to fund another trip, he's just out of luck? I'm reading that as once you've shot your elephant now days, you are forever the one to possess the tusks.

    Just noticed your post.

Technically it has no value from what I understand. Hope the kids want it.

Now if you lived in China.......
