Love the photos Foxi.

Looks like Granger has a typical african patch for a split stock.

Can you imagine a safari where you get two elephants that each have to be well north of 120lbs. Amazing times.

Hi Wheels,
Im happy that you have a little joy with it.
The South Sudan must have been the gold mine of tusker in old days.
Have you ever heard from a PH named Werner Brach ?
He worked in the Sudan with good success until the early 70ies.
Wrote a book ,Memories of Africa, published by Safari Press.
But I dont know so he is still alive.
Ive heard nothing anymore about him.
Regards
Foxi

Wow,what a gun,what a (hi-)story.
The Potockis were one of the leading families in Poland (before Stalin came in).
Sure ,that the double rifle has seen a lot.

I will have to get that book. Thanks.

The southern part of Sudan still had big ivory coming out of it in the 1980's if I remember correct. Possibly the 70's. It had to be an amazing place to hunt.

Below is another good book that deals with ivory hunting in the Sudan in the years right after the war.

Out In The Midday Shade: Memoirs of an African Hunter 1949-1968 in the Sudan and Kenya

I recently read some information that you and others might find interesting. "Teaching and Hunting in East Africa" Dan McNickle. He was part of a USA program similar to the Peace Corp but for teachers. In 1966 he went into a store in Arusha, that had a .577 Holland & Holland DR for sale for $300USD. He offered them $50. (This was the days when you could hardly find ammo for any British large caliber rifle except .375. I do remember .375 Kynoch in 5 packs at this time.) After 3 months of negotiations, he agreed to buy the .577 for $100. This included 40 rounds of ammo.

He shot an elephant with ivory 74/67 and sold it for 2,604TZS which was $372USD, which paid off his car and the .577.

A lot has changed in 50 years.;)

@Hoas thanks for placing the video here. Perhaps someone will identify the bull in the video.

@CAustin,
I know you are a special fan of the elephants.
Found a pic of a majestic bull in one of my old books for you.
Late 50ies ,Uganda, the former pearl of Africa and today.................

Pas de deux of the elephants.
And you can see, why you should use a bigger caliber for them, than for a "small" buffalo.

here you can see Magritte Ramme' with the world record tusks.
I can imagine what you are thinking ,but don't forget the picture is 40 years old.
