Just wondering, is it cheaper to buy duty free tobacco/cigarettes as perks for the trackers etc in Johannesburg airport as opposed to the European duty free prices?
I don't want to spend loads of money at home only to find the same things cheaper while I'm in transit in SA!

mate just buy the local stuff.....
from what ive seen ,the lads prefer it .
and from my sons experience don't buy talor mades , as the trackers just break the filters of the stinking bloody things ,and smoke away
just buy a pouch and papers , tho most just use newspaper ......
last year in the east cape, I bought the tracker a couple of packs over the two weeks , and the rubbish was about 1/4 the price it would of been in australia

First find out if your trackers even smoke. On my safari none of the 3 trackers smoked and neither did any of the 4 other skinners.

Tobacco would of been a waist of money.

Are generally the Cigarette of choice.

SA is much cheaper than the European Duty free option.

I have purchased items at the duty free shops and will not do it again. I plan ahead and find the items on sale were i live and purchase prior to leaving. Just make sure that you are under the allowable limit allowed.

From the prices that i have seen in the duty free shops, you may as well find a good purchase where you live and save your self some money.

Thanks James, however, I guess you're unaware of the prices of cigarettes and tobacco in the UK.
Our government tax them beyond affordability. For example a packet of Marlboro cigarettes is just a few cents short of $15 when converted from GBP.

I found out the hard way that no one sells snuff in Africa. On about day 5 of my 10 day trip I was out. Talk about a bummer! :(

One of my hunting partners uses Skoal and thought that he had brought enough..........well by the third day of the hunts he decided that he had better start to ration it. The end of the hunt came around and then we started to tour around South Africa. Our PH/tour guide found him something that he tried in Mossel Bay. It reminded me of the plug tobacco that you see on old westerns. A couple of days later we were in Cape Town at the mall and found a tobacco shop where he found a suitable substitute which he bought a have dozen tins of. It looked a lot like Skoal Long Cut and between that and the couple of tins that he had left of the Skoal he made it through the rest of the time down there but it was close.

The moral of the story is if you use it you better make sure that you have more than you need for the trip or be prepared for some strange stuff.

First trip over I noticed our tracker skinner smoking when we stopped for a break. He was rolling his own using old newspaper for rolling paper. Second trip I bought the guy ten packs of bugle boy that had papers inside and ten packages of papers in addition. I gave them to him on the first day and you would have thought that I gave him ten pounds of gold. He was a happy guy for sure. I would email the outfitter and ask him if the trackers or skinners smoke. Then you will know what to do. You can deffinitely get smokes in the airport.

Being a non-smoker myself I bring along a couple of pounds of non flavored honey straws. The trackers, skinners and camp staff love them. I ration them out as we ride in the truck with maybe several as a bonus after a successful stalk. For those interested this is the place I get mine from. http://www.thistledewfarm.com The owner is real easy to deal with and will get them in the mail right away.
