Hunting South Africa With DRIES VISSER SAFARIS
Our main concession, Citadel, is situated in the western part of the Limpopo Province, close to Thabazimbi. This area is in the real African Bushveld, dotted with huge Knob thorn and Leadwood trees, where a hunter can be assured of a fair chase hunt.

Families are welcome to accompany hunters to enjoy Africa in comfort. Rich bird-life and wandering game reflect the tranquillity of the African bush, and make this a must for photography enthusiasts. Side trips can be arranged for hunters and observers.

When hunting in South Africa, or in any other African country, there are a variety of animals to select from. Animals are divided into two categories. Some are more dangerous than others, providing a tougher challenge. These are known as dangerous game. Other animals provide less of a challenge but just as much thrill and these are known as plains game. When choosing an African safari, you need to know what kind of animal you are looking to hunt. You will also need to consider the geographical region in which you are hunting. Not all animals inhabit the same kinds of environments.

Then there is the selection of hunting outfitter as well as the infrastructure of the nation in which you are hunting. Your entire hunting experience can be affected by your choice of outfitter. So when you are making your decision, be sure to check out their credentials as well as those of their Professional Hunters (PH).

Area Information

Bowhunting In South Africa With DRIES VISSER SAFARIS
Dries Visser Safaris has specialized in bowhunting in South Africa for many years. For more than two decades, they have catered for hundreds of bowhunters, and fast became the best bowhunting outfitter in South Africa. Dries Visser Safaris bowhunting concessions are some of the best bowhunting in Africa and are used exclusively for bowhunting, with an abundance of game. Many different species can be hunted from blinds or tree stands, making this a bowhunter’s paradise!

At Dries Visser Safaris we offer three methods of bowhunting: walk and stalk, blinds at waterholes and tree stands at game trails.

Walk And Stalk
Definitely one of the most liked methods of hunting, but not the most successful. It could be very difficult at certain times of the year. The best months to stalk are definitely our rain season months from March to June which is right after our main raining season. During this time our hunting area offers great stalking opportunities as there will be cover to get close enough for the perfect shot. The bush will still be green to minimize noise. After June it gets very dry in our region and all trees lose their leaves, which makes stalking almost impossible to get within bow range to the target, due to no cover and the noise when stalking. Hunters need to be prepared for shot distances of 15-50 yards.

IMG_8501-687x1030.jpg

Blinds At Waterholes
This method is definitely the most successful method in taking quantity and quality of animals. Although some portable or pop-up blinds might be used, most of our blinds will be permanently enclosed pit blinds. When the door is shut, and windows closed these blinds are completely sealed to eliminate human odour and noise drifting to game. The blinds are built in different directions in order to allow hunters to hunt during any wind direction. They are also dark on the inside to minimize movements after opening the windows. The blinds are built with one-way windows on 3 sides of the blind. These windows are spaced so that you can view the whole area while sitting on your chair. No need to stand up and peak through windows! They are built big enough for two, maybe three, people. Average shot distances to water will be 16 yards and only 12 yards to the minerals!

Blind-4-edit-495x400.jpg

Tree Stands At Game Trails
Very popular method of hunting, but not as successful as blind hunting. Our tree stands are situated at game trails away from roads and deep in the bush. We also place some minerals on these trails. We make use of tree stands in the early mornings and late afternoons when the game move around to graze. Average shot distances will be under 20 yards. Bring your camo clothing and safety belt with, as this is definitely something you would like to experience while bow hunting Africa!

Crossbow Hunting With In South Africa With DRIES VISSER SAFARIS
There is no doubt that crossbow hunting African game species can be a rich and rewarding experience! In fact, South Africa has what is perhaps the largest variety of plains game species in the world as well as several dangerous game species for those archers who prefer a somewhat more challenging hunt.

Embark on your own hunting journey of a lifetime and experience a crossbow adventure in the wilds of South Africa with Dries Visser Safaris.

IMG_4740-1030x819.jpg

Here we cater to all bow hunters, whether you shoot traditional bows or prefer to hunt with a compound bow or crossbow. The Limpopo Bushveld region offers some of the most spectacular bow hunting opportunities. Most of the hunting is done from blinds and tree-stands and shot distances at the various stands vary from 10 yards to 20 yards. So whether you are a novice or an expert, we will get you on your dream trophy animals.

When picking the right crossbow to hunt make sure your bow is comfortable to hold, consistently accurate with a smooth trigger action and decent scope. Your crossbow must have enough FPS to make it deadly at up to 40 yards away. It must allow for a dependable, quiet and smooth cocking.

Our professional hunters and experienced staff understand the special needs of a crossbow hunter.

Rifle Hunting In South Africa With DRIES VISSER SAFARIS
Dries Visser Safaris offers high quality trophy rifle hunts in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest hunting grounds in the world, and one of the best destinations for rifle hunting in South Africa.

Rifle Hunting is conducted on foot (spot-and-stalk). Herds will be located by driving around the hunting area and spotting the animals. From there a stalk is initiated to get within shooting range. Shot distances range from between 50 yards and 200 yards and shots are typically taken off tri-pod shooting sticks.

IMG_8501-687x1030.jpg

The question of which calibre is best and which rifle to bring on safari can be a topic of endless discussion. Bolt action rifles is by far the most popular form of hunting in South Africa. If it is dangerous game that you are after, the .375 calibre is the minimum prescribed by law in most African countries. For the average hunter coming to Africa for plains game, bring a rifle that you are completely familiar with and comfortable shooting. Any calibres in the 300-class (308, 30-06, 300 WSM, 300 WM and others) will be more than enough gun for all our plains game species. The right rifle will, in many instances, largely depend on the bag of trophies you are interested in taking.

A word about bullets – as a general rule, premium quality, heavy-for calibre bullets are your best choice. Many fine bullets are on the market today; the Nosler Partition, the Swift A-Frame, Woodleigh Weldcore, Barnes X & Triple Shock, just to name a few. Many of these fine bullets are available in factory-loaded ammunition and can also be hand-loaded, if you possess those skills. African game seems to be a bit tougher than game found elsewhere in the world. Perhaps this is due to evolution and the extensive predation to which they are subjected, so do not “skimp” on ammunition.

IMG_8456.jpg

Shot Placement
Shot placement is the most important aspect of any discussion regarding hunting with a rifle. Shot placement is as critical as the ammunition that shoots well from your rifle. Spend quality time at the shooting range making sure your rifle fires at point-of-aim. A badly placed shot with even the largest of rifles and the finest bullets available will result, at best, in a very long day of tracking and, at worst, a lost trophy. The loss of a fine trophy can be a big disappointment but, in case you haven’t heard: if you make it bleed, you pay for it.

I wanted to compliment you on a job very well done. I've been to Africa many times but always selected countries with more wilderness areas that RSA. My son is ten and a fanatical bowhunter that showed me about 5 hours of bowhunting videos you've produced. They were exceptionally good and your shot placement and anatomy guidance was very valuable to the archery community.

In the future, I suspect we'll pay you a visit to do a dedicated archery plains game safari based upon what I witnessed in your adverts.

Hi Luke. Just saw your message. I am in Dillingham, and have been since 2002. I took an elementary teaching gig here, taught here five years, and then got a job with Togiak National Wildlife Refuge as their education and outreach specialist. Recently I just got a promotion and now I'm the Visitor Services Manager. Prior to DLG I spent 6 years teaching for Lake and Pen in Nondalton.

Hi TT
I am glad you found some useful info in my posts. Hard cast WFN with GC will do the job fine. I trust Veral Smith (owner of LBT company) - I believe that he can provide you with some finest HC bullets. Many companies are coping his design. I can help you from here in developing max loads (40.000psi) just let me know which powder you are using (I use Quick Load software which turns to be very reliable).
