Double rifles and Elephant

Woodcarver, BTW Sir, we may find ourselves around a real hunting campfire some day, if we do, I'll bring that Holland, you're most welcome to shoot and hunt with it, those nickel cases in the photo came from a buddy that had thrown them in the trash, I asked, what the hell are you going to do with those? give them to you if you want them, my old buddy is a Cope dipper, I dug over 100 cases out of a trash can after that turd had spit what looked like a snuff can fulla tobacco juice on them LOL.

They were beautiful Federal 470 Nitro cases, brought em home and threw em in a plastic bucket, half filled it with gasoline, got my pistol cleaning rod and 50 cal plastic brush and gave em a good scrubbing, let dry, washed again with Dawn and hot water, let dry again, ran through 500-450 FL die, trimmed to length, end result was over 100 beautiful regulating light big game loads with the 350gr Woodleigh soft point, they use the same 106gr charge of H-4831, have only shot one deer and one pig with that load, but obviously have no bullets recovered.

Very glad to have em, but man I worked for those nickel cases ; ]

mms45, I sincerely hope you find just the Holland double you seek, they're great handling rifles.

257r7x57, Thanks for that history lesson, TR lived 500 years in his short 60 years on earth.

AZDAVE, will certainly report, Thanks, looking like Bots or Zim for the combo Ele/Lion hunt.

steve white, oh damn, that had to be awful, but a sweet and sour blessing just the same, it would definitely charge my hunting instincts just to get to see what's living there and may be found again, cool story.

lvW, I have a beautiful little Alfred Schilling boxlock 500 Nitro with 26" barrels, 11 lbs, a joy to carry and shoot, it fires both 570gr TSX and banded flat nosed solids 2168 fps with perfect 50 yard regulation, my 577 with 750gr TSX and banded flat nosed solids at 2076 fps most certainly does NOT lack penetration, already proved.

Sharing a campfire with you would be an honor. Using that H&H would be another. Hard to believe someone using any big bore doesn't know the value of the brass, not to mention how hard some of it is to come by. Makes one wonder how much does get thrown away every year. Gas might be a little overkill for tobacco juice, lol, but that brass should be fully sanitized now!
Looking forward to hearing about the hunt you're lining up!

Here's some of that gun porn from @50Gunner as requested....

Frame by frame of video shooting 500-450 at rock on the far side of pond with 450gr NF flat nose solid, 2220fps, at 88 yards. Rested off old tractor hood (better than sticks, lol). Couldn't get the video to load.

Last pick, the rifle is just being raised, not from recoil, but dust cloud from rock still rising. Rise from recoil can be seen between pic 1 and 2. Pic 3, back on target.
The rock being shot across pond. Can see the impact mark on pond side.

I honestly don’t think you can beat those great old English doubles . They handle so very well and with the correct loads they are very accurate at their hinting ranges of 50-100 yards. I’d take the H&H . You know it will work and such a beautiful rifle .

The pleasure would be all mine Woodcarver, indeed makes one wonder about brass cases chunked in the trash, heck, that 450 #2 brass and dies I sold you was bought by me over 15 years prior just in case the right 450 #2 double came along, but alas, a 500 Nitro landed in my lap instead, but certainly hung onto that brass, it doesn't eat a thing waiting in a box on a load shelf.

PCC600, I agree fully on the handling, have said it before, and not to brag, only paying my respects to those great Brit double rifles builders of old, but that little Holland is the only rifle I have ever seen that looks like it's moving 100 MPH sitting on a table, they crushed that build.

Another thing I was blessed to hear when I brought the rifle in for a checkup prior to a 2022 Safari, JJ told me he could make or build ANY part in that wonderful Holland sidelock action, man that was indeed very welcomed and wonderful news.

I will be looking for dark mane and 80 LBS.

The H&H Royal DRs are superb . I have one of similar vintage to yours . It leaves my other old and new DRs for dead in handling , accuracy and sheer good looks . They are the cream of the crop .

PCC600, yes Sir, many Thanks for the compliments, I agree, I own no other double or bolt gun that feels anywhere as good in hand, not even close, simply honored to be it's caretaker for the time i have left on this spinning rock we're all stuck too, hope it's passed on to the next that will appreciate it as much.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
Impala cull hunt for camp meat!
