Did anyone spend any money so far at the Atlanta DSC convention?

Let's see.
Bought the 4th signed edition of "Shooting the British Double Rifle"
Bought a new 1 MOA Trijicon RMR HD for my Rigby .500 NE.
Made the mistake of accepting a latte from Jerome at Rigby, while sitting down I was telling him of my ideal left hand bolt action rifle. He said he could build it for me in London Best configuration, 9.3x62 caliber for driven hunts. Waiting for a final quote.
Waiting on dates for a lion, hippo and 4 buffalo hunt in Tanzania for 2027. Will finalize then.
Waiting on a final quote and dates for a buffalo hunt in Namibia this year.
Waiting on a final quote and dates for red partridge driven hunt in Spain between Nov. 2026 and March 2027.
Found a custom leather case maker. They will make the case for my Rigby with two barrels and the scope and make it to fit inside a pelican take down case. That way I can take it out at camp and go to the back of the Land Rover. Here is a picture of what it will look like but room for two barrels.

London Best via latte…watch out or you may end up with a Rising Bite if you meet for a cup of Earl Gray ;)

THIS CONVENTION WE VISITED WITH PAST OUTFITS WE HAVE HUNTED WITH AND VISITED GUYS WE HAVE BOOKED WITH LATER THIS YEAR. NO LARGE PURCHASES, MY SON AND HIS BUDDY BOUGHT JEWELRY FOR VALENTINES FOR THEIR WIVES AND DAUGHTERS, COUPLE OF BODDINGTON BOOKS, A FLAGPOLE AND FLAGS FOR HIS NEW HOUSE AND I HELPED A PRETTY YOUNG LADY MAKE HER QUOTA BY RE-UPPING MY SCRIP TO SPORTS AFIELD.
ENJOYED THE MEXICAN FOOD, MARGARITAS AND CONVERSATION WE HAD AT THE AH DINNER. OUR TABLE WON 3 OUT OF 4 HATS (I'M NOT KNOWN FOR MY LUCK!)

Had a great time sitting with your crew at the dinner!!!

You all are my kind of people!!

Booked a hunt, met with my outfitter for this coming summer and bought some shooting sticks. Got measured for a rifle that's on order. Resisted a Rigby Sidelock in 350 #2 at William Larkin Moore. But I may eventually give in. Met with the fabulous folks at Gracy Travel & Parkwest Arms. Got ignored at Steve Barnett guns. Had a chat with Larry Potterfield. Got sore feet.
I followed up about the 350 #2 today and they sold it this weekend. Alas. But great people to work with (William Larkin Moore.) Friendly at their booth, quick, complete and polite response to my email today.

What a lot of people fail to understand is they shouldn't be sizing up clients. They should realize that clients are sizing up THEM, their product or service.

I think it is a lot better nowadays, no one blew me off at any of the booths. And I looked like this.

Yes and you and I agree on the importance of connecting well with the guide. In fact, you gave me excellent advice one time based on one of your experiences. That kind of advice is very important and I have certainly spent many hours on the phone with AH members to answer their questions about my own experiences. That's one of the most valuable things this forum offers; transparency on hunts of all types.
I was able to meet my ph that was recommended by a few members including 375fox. It only helped solidify it was the right choice after spending a good hour with him over the two days I was at the show. I wouldn’t think I’d be able to push out a 50+k hunt , but now that I can I need to talk to my ph in person, or extensively on the phone.

The guys at Westley Richards were great and went over my droplock in detail (yes I carried it in). I have a much better understanding of the gun’s provenance and quality now. It was actually made for a mayor of Buenos Aires and is a very high grade gun.

No hunts bought at the show, but have a couple outfits putting together thoughts for driven partridge in Spain or Portugal.

Lots of truth in this.. especially in business.. and even moreso in politics..

its hard to tell who is wearing a suit from JC Pennys vs Brooks Brothers vs a custom tailor if the owner has bothered to have it fitted properly.. but its easy to tell a rolex or a panarai or an omega from a citizen or a timex.. and its pretty easy to tell a fine set of Italian leather shoes or custom boots from an entry level pair of Clarks bought at shoe carnival…

Another old school “size up” used to be the pen a man carried… Mont Blanc = more success than waterman = more success thank Parker or Cross = more success than bic…

I’m sure the pen size up has gone the way of the dodo bird now though since everyone on earth, regardless of wealth or success now has an iPhone or Samsung… and no one carries a pen anymore…
I wouldn’t have a clue about watches or pens . Never sized up anyone on this basis . I’ve led multinational companies for decades . I can recognise if someone is neat / clean / well dressed ( no idea if clothes are off the shelf , tailored or bespoke ) . I judge a person on when they open their mouth . Generally tells me all I need to know .

Fine Shooting Accessories, Ltd., they make everything themselves.

Here is the case:

Thanks! Will be perusing their wares for the next few minutes!

That may be true for you… but if you have indeed led multinational companies for decades (that makes you Gen X at a minimum, but more than likely a boomer), then you are well aware that this is not uncommon at all among the older generations..

It’s so true in fact it got built into the story line in numerous movies, tv shows, books, etc from the 60’s through the 90’s…

There was even an entire movie built around the thought… 1962.. “The Shoes”… a guy believes getting better shoes will improve his social standing…

Gordon Gecko sends Bud Fox in the movie Wall Street to buy a better suit because he doesn’t look the part of a Wall Street trader - 1987

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 1987 - there is an entire scene dedicated to guys sizing each up over their watches and demonstrating related social status

Iron Man 2008 - Tony Stark wears a bulgari watch.. comments by both stark and others are made about how the watch demonstrates social status and wealth..

The list is a million miles long… because art imitates reality..

Led public companies all round the world . I never dealt with flash spivs . I’m 68 so I have been around . No idea why you reference TV shows / movies / dreamworld . No idea about fashion / watches / pens. It must be an Aussie thing .

I reference movies/tv/etc because it’s so much a thing (or was) in US business culture that it routinely was integrated into the very programming watched in the US for more than 3 decades.. anyone involved in US business at any notable level that’s older than about 40 has seen this, and has seen a LOT of it..

while more prominent in US business culture than other places, the behavior is far from exclusively American.. I’ve absolutely seen it out of Europeans, Aussies, and pretty much every “Western” culture on earth to one degree or another.. in fact, one of the absolute worst people I knew at this (he was actually a great guy and a good friend.. but he’d size up every single person he met based on what tie they were wearing, the quality of their shoes, their watch, etc) was an Aussie that at the time was the chief of the Workd Bank office in Singapore.. he was so extreme that he would go out of his way to buy a particular designer tie (for the life of me I can’t remember the designers name now) and gift them to his “underdressed” friends because he wanted them to look the part of world bank leadership and didn’t want to otherwise associate with rif-raf…

Needless to say, he bought me several ties lol.. he thought my brooks brothers as Jos A Bank ties were too “American” and didn’t look the part for the role I played at the bank at the time..

Contracts signed for hunts in next few years at the recent conventions:

Nepal - blue sheep, 10/26.
Zimbabwe - tuskless elephant, 9/27.
Cameroon - Lord Derby Eland, 3/28.

I am truly thinking of returning for another hunt in the African jungle - the ecosystem is special! Forest elephants, bongo, lowland gorillas, exotic birds and more. Like life, nothing is easy in the jungle. Total misery, at times but I loved the place..

See many of you soon at the SCI Convention in Nashville and the AHF Gathering. Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a.k.a Tom.

Reminds me of the scene in the movie a Bridge to Far.

"Now, I've selected you to lead us not only because of your extraordinary fighting ability, but also because in the unlikely event that the Germans ever get you, they will assume from your attire that they've captured a wretched peasant, and immediately send you on your way".

I can assure you it is very much a thing. It’s not just clothes and accessories, it’s also cars and second/third homes. I worked at the highest levels of the corporate world but refused to participate in the nonsense. As a result, when a company tried to move me into a role and location I didn’t want, I was able to step off the merry go round at 49.

Alternatively, many of my peers, earning seven figures annually, were living paycheck to paycheck. Porches, Jags, Bentleys, second homes in Hawaii or the desert. It’s amazing how much cash you can burn if you put your mind to it.

Interesting side note, I have worked for and with two of the richest men in the world, think top ten or twenty. They can’t be bothered with this crap. It seems that it is the new money, almost there folks that have to have the status symbols.

I’ve been a CEO for just under 7 years and was a COO for the 3 years prior to that.. and spent about a decade in senior management and executive positions for a decade prior to obtaining a COO seat..

While I don’t consider myself “rich”.. there’s a reason we live in a middle class house that’s probably 2 social ladder steps below our means, drive pretty common vehicles (I drive a lower end tundra), etc… hell.. 90% of the time my work wear these days is a hoodie or a t-shirt depending on the weather… I 10000% refuse to play the game.. and have prepared myself to punch out any time that it becomes a requirement…

Thankfully society sees this as less and less of a requirement each day…

But… it’s definitely a “thing” still with older generations… and was still a really big thing even just 20 years ago…

Good luck being considered for a C-Suite position in some companies if you don’t wear these right shoes, own the right watch, drive the right car, have an “appropriate” wife, etc etc..

It’s not limited to work environments either… you’ll see it in social settings too… want to get your kids into private school or join a local country club… have the means to do that with no problem? Cool… but… you better show up wearing these days right watch to the interview.. or you might find yourself without an invitation to join…

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
