Does anyone know if there is any sort of background check by TSA on leaving the US? How about on return by Immigration and Customs?

I have a very old DWI and misdeameanor.

    Thanks.

The issue will NOT be LEAVING your own country or with TSA.

The issue is whether you are admissible in the country to which you are traveling.
If their customs officer deems you undesirable at entry you can be turned around and sent home.

In all likelihood you'll be fine.

If you have no outstanding warrants, you should have no problems. When your passport is scanned (by customs - not TSA), it will pull up an outstanding issue, but the check is not designed to perform a "background check".

Getting into Canada would likely be much more of an issue than an African country. Canada doesn't take kindly to DUI's.
