I am reaching out to all those AH members who have hunted Eastern Europe for your opinion. @skydiver386 and I are thinking of a driven hunt for anything that walks by our stand and less concerned with trophy size. We possibly would also like a driven bird hunt, plus a week of sightseeing. After the SCI convention we are thinking of either Czech Republic or Slovakia.

We would like detailed opinions, cost comparison, sightseeing options, animal possibilities in each region, food quality, and of course outfitters you have been happy with. Thank you for all your help in advice.

I unfortunately have no hunting wisdom to offer and know nothing about Slovakia, but I can say that I loved Czechia (Czech Republic) and wish I had been able to hunt while I was there. Great people, interesting culture, and at least when I was there, cheap. If you end up going there, take extra days and check out Prague and some of the other highlights.

K and K Premium Jagd has some driven hunts in Slovakia and some regular hunts. Check them out. I know they speak highly of the country. It is about a 12 hour drive from here, or I would be more interested.

I am a Hungary and Slovenia hunter, this year I am headed to Czech Republic for roe for the first time in May.

Plus my normal hunts in Slovenia in august and November in the Alps for chamois, fallow, roe and some abschuss Hirsch.

My two cents. I dont think you can go wrong with either but if you want to judge the two against each other:
- Czech R is more beautiful and probably somewhat more expensive than Slovakia (also beautiful though).
- Slovakia has a really strong hunting culture you will notice.
- CR has a more developed tourist culture, e.g. Prague is absolutely stunning (only one bomb was dropped on it in WWII so it was not devastated like many Euro cities).

Consider talking to Roger at WTA. He lives in Austria but books hunts throughout Europe. He can give you all kinds of info.

You could also hunt both countries, or hunt in one and tour the other, etc... Fly into Prague and travel by car rest of trip, including to Slovakia, etc.

Lastly, driven hunting aint cheap but a classic Euro custom! Let us know what you do brother. Cheers

Greetings. Driven hunting is exceptional in both countries. I have no doubt that you will enjoy whatever you choose. Otherwise, if there are only the two of you, the organizer will probably have to connect you with other clients, because a powered hunt for two cannot be organized. The best dates are in December. When it comes to trophies, the hunt organizer specifies how many male oldes boar there are that will appear before the hunters. The price depends significantly on that. Also, the organizer guarantees how many shooting chances there will be in total. I'm talking now about fenced hunters who make serious wild boar hunts. Drive hunting for wild boars in the wild is extremely unpredictable and nothing can be guaranteed, so hunters who live outside the EU rarely come to such hunting grounds.

Well, I am opinionated being born and raised there, but I think if you want to go that part of the world you would be better served in Hungary. Plenty of options for driven hunts, mostly wild boar and some non trophy red deer and fallow deer, and exceptional bird hunting is also available.

Hungary wasn't on our radar, but maybe it should be.

I told Tina since I picked the last hunt, it was her turn to look around at SCI and pick one. She spotted a booth with hunting in Slovakia and it did look like a high quality outfitter. Driven boar and bird hunting and a choice of lodging.

Several people have suggested the Czech Republic or Spain, but it's going to be up to her. I figured I was going to the U.K. for Dracula Deer and Muntjac.

Serbia and Croatia have a perfect driven hunt

So many choices, I need help figuring it out! I want it all …. Hunting and sightseeing and a place I have never been. Lol

I've not been to Slovakia, but I have to CR for tourism. As @Albert GRANT says, it's a beautiful place. I was last there in 2019, and it was dirt cheap then, I expect it probably still is.

The 1 bad thing about CR is the beer. It's all really good - I had a different label and/or style with every meal (usually 2 or even 3), and it's really, really easy to get a little too enthusiastic about drinking it.

Pilsner beer was invented in Pilsn, CR. Germany's got nothing on them at all.

The pork was heavenly, as were all of their sausages and cured meats. Prague and Brno are worth a week even if you don't want to hunt. If you appreciate Gothic architecture, Prague is Goth central. But there's also a lot of soviet-era ugly shit from the 60s and 70s.

I'm planning on hunting there at some point in the next 3 or 4 years, it just hasn't come off the back burner yet.

If I HAD to pick a place in Europe to ex-pat to, CR is at the top of a very short list.

My sentiments exactly! I have a picture somewhere of a 1.5 liter bottel of beer for what amounted to about $.75 USD. The pork knuckle was literally one of the best food experiences of my life. Loved walking the city at night along the river!

The thing that disappointed me about the river was its size. I grew up practically on the banks of the Big Muddy in Baton Rouge. "The Moldau" is one of my favorite Romance Era compositions, and I had a picture in my mind's eye that didn't meet very closely with reality. Still very pretty, but even the Danube is like a ditch compared to the Mississippi.

@sgt_zim
Not much compares to the Mississippi in width, that's for sure, but it's size almost takes away from it in my eyes. I prefer average to slightly larger rivers with some rock and character.

That is a strange thing to be disappointed by. I grew up next to the Wind River in Wyoming. Famous to us, but damn small. Lived most of my life in the desert, so any body of water is neat to me.

The Rhein is about an hour from my house, and it is huge to me, but probably not bigger than the Columbia.

Danube where I have visited it is a creek by comparison to the Rhein. Never been that far down stream.

Saw this guy live last year at Christmas. Best concert I have ever seen in my entire life.

Yes, he played Blue Danube!

Beer in mainland Europe is cheap. .50-3.00 Euro a bottle for 95% of it. There are some things made by monks in Belgium (some of it is heaven, some foul) that is 15.00 euros a bottle.

I am partial to English, Irish, German and Belgian beers. Czech beer is great, but like beer that is darker.

Best brewery I have ever had in my life is Poxx Brau in Bavaria. They have about 30 beers.

I’m actually not a beer fan and don’t drink it at all. I just saw how cheap it was compared to the USA and had to take a pic. I did find a hard cranberry cider there that was excellent. Had never heard of it before and was surprised. Just as surprised in South Africa to find the best hard apple cider I’ve ever had. Seems like odd places for that, but there it is.

I’ve hunted in Czech several times for driven boar. It’s been great. Hubertus hunting tours are based in Prague. They were offering driven boar hunts last winter close to the area I have been in. I asked the Czech organiser if he knew anything about them. He gave them the thumbs up.
They organise both driven pheasant and boar.

I will be in Hungary and Austria at the end of November for three days of driven hunting. This will be wild boar and female red deer. The drives are conducted free range on both sides of the border (I fly into Vienna). 6-8 hunters participate, and last year's hunts averaged forty animals a day. The red deer and non-trophy boar are in the base price. A large Keiler incurs a trophy fee. Fortunately, for an American who hasn't developed the skill set to instantly tell with absolute certainty a keiler from a sow as it darts past, any boar can be taken.

My hunt will be through Martin Neuper of FN Hunting. I have hunted with him for a number of years and many of the reports are on this site. https://www.fnhunting.com/ I would also suggest you contact the Hunting Consortium https://huntingconsortium.com/ Bob Kern and his lovely wife have been arranging such hunts for decades. They can also make arrangements for the tourist portion of the hunt.

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
