CZ 550 Stock CRACKED!!!

In this picture it looks like the action was glass bedded and the tang of the action did not have the proper relief ie, the rear of action is tight against bedding and stock. Not sure if that is actually the case, but appears to be from this picture. Just bringing this up as it could be the reason your stock is cracking and it is important to not have it happen again.
I was about to post this when I saw your post, if it’s touching , whoever bedded it is the person who caused the problem

What about the weight you loose from a wood stocks… put lead in it? This one is already at the tipping point of “desired” felt recoil lol

Both of mine weigh bout 9.5lbs and I find the recoil with 416 no probs...500 is bit more sporty but still not a problem...the 500 I put a dead mule recoil reducer in it but whether it works or not I haven't a clue...416 doesn't and its bit of a pussy in reality...others have shot my 500 and said not that bad at all....but those B&C synthetic fit me perfectly...

Well, I didnt see it till I saw it lol. My CZ chambered in 505 Gibbs has not one but two cracks working through it. It’s saddening especially as I’m in the process of making sure it’s up to the task for an elephant hunt this year. So I’m scrambling.
Who is KNOWN for the best hardwood stocks for these beasts of calibers and would go far above and beyond the usuall for glass bedding and maybe even rod reinforcement ?

One thing I have learned so far for these safari guns is it’s, money anything….
Tim Ditmore at Matrix put a Bell & Carlson on my CZ 375 H&H, cut the stock to my LOP, Pachmyer recoil pad, added mercury tubes, and did some upgrades. He was great to work with. I have a Boyd stock on another CZ, but I am happy with Tim's advice and went with the B&C on the .375.

Always has been shoulder fired or shoulder fired off sticks. I don’t even own one of those untrustworthy contraptions lol
But good question indeed
Only about 25 rounds too….. didn’t take long
Good to know. If it were mine, I’d consider a laminate stock. They have the warmth of wood but are much stronger than solid wood stocks. They do tend to be heavier than composite stocks, but that’s an asset on a hard kicker. Good luck.

Someone might have a CZ stock lying around (if they replaced with synth or better wood.) Kevin Robertson has a section of Africa's Most Dangerous where he discusses necessary mods to the CZs (Not a high-end rifle.) Contact HS Precision, Bansner's (as I know HS once sold them and Bansner's makes custom stocks of many materials.) IF you can get an HS, it is like a pillar-bedded metal frame molded into the synthetic and you can get up to 2 Hg recoil reducers installed by 'em. Most stock makers take forever, so you had better "get on this" ASAP! That said, they will understand your pain of the looming hunt date. IF you find another wood, have it properly relieved and FL bedded to spread that load out as much as possible. Does the CZ have a recoil lug?

"Which is better? M70 or CZ550?" (I too fear the factory stock on a 70 in .470. I might get a synth just to preserve the value of the factory custom stock, as I've had 'em crack in the past too, on a .375 HH Steyr.)

GL!!!

*A Boyd's as noted above would make perfect sense timewise (much stronger laminate and felt recoil will be reduced.) Bedding not necessary for strength, but recommended for accuracy if not already pillar bedded.) Reach out to CZ too, if it's their original stock! My dealings with folks in CZ (other sporting companies) have been Superior! Some of the nicest, most qualified people in the workforce. (They repaired some big tripod bino optics FOC in about 2 mos. Binos fell from rock I was standing on to rocks below when the "bino bikini" strap broke!)

I understand the appeal of keeping an African style big bore rifle looking traditional but a B&C synthetic stock is a much smarter choice.

I had a 505 that probably shot around 100 heavy loads from a lead sled without issues (570gr and 600gr bullets at 2100-2300fps). I also shot 40 or so rounds from my friends 505 on the same sled (525gr bullets at around 2300fps). In the end, the sled fell apart :ROFLMAO:.

Only way i could see a sled being an issue is if it was bolted down.
Too much weight on the sled will damage stocks on hard recoiling rifles. especially ones with no clearance at the rear tang.

CZ 's of that size will have a receiver lug and a barrel lug, the barrel lug tends to be free floating (as in loose)and needs to be bedded by someone who knows what they are doing , it’s not hard to do, but easy to mess up. I’ve only seen metal barrel lugs, but someone else said they have a plastic one on some of them??

You would have to put ALOT of weight for it to fail to give. If memory serves me right, i used around 50 pounds of lead shot. A 600gr bullet a 2200fps had no trouble moving the weight and me behind it. This was a gorgeous AHR 505 Gibbs that had some of the best looking wood I've seen on a rifle (i deeply regret selling it!)

Perhaps hundreds of pounds on the lead sled might break a stock... But i think its far more likely that guns breaking on lead sleds had some flaw in their stock to begin with.

Get a new standard stock, pretty it up, get it glass bedded. Get the rods through the wrist. Get dual crossbolts. Total cost, <$1500.

Putting big money into a 505 Gibbs stock for a CZ action is just throwing away $10 grand. Its just as likely to break as the doctored up economy approach above.

had a blaser R84 break 2 stocks in a year. Horst Blaser stood behind it and replaced them each time.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
