Picked up a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .300 win mag at my local gun shop (for a song at $600.....) a few weeks ago. I'm having a really hard time finding any information on the Safari Magnums in this caliber. I seem to recall some being made in 300 win mag and 7mm rem mag. Can anyone comment on the prevalence of this rifle in these medium bore chamberings?

    Thanks,

To be honest , I have never seen ONE CZ rifle that worked properly out of the box. You need to have some work done to them to make them work right.
You would be better off getting one on an older ZKK602 action.

I have, mine has never had work on it and is flawless. I'm picking up my next 550 tomorrow and am assuming it too should be good.

I have a CZ 550 in .308 and a CZ .223 that worked flawlessly out the box. Extremely accurate and reliable. My CZ 550 in .375 had feeding problems which a bit of polishing solved.
How many CZ rifles have you owned and struggled with?

It's Nice to know that l misjudged the CZ.
I came across 4 till now which have jammed : Two in .458 Win Mag , one in .500 Jeffery and one in .505 Gibbs as of 2017. To be fair , after showing them to a gunsmith , all these problems were remedied and they worked flawlessly.
If l am not mistaken , it would appear that the larger caliber ones need a bit of work done to 'em

this whole cz thing is a worry.
if they were consistent in manufacture, they would ALL jam the same way, or ALL feed the same way etc.
the worry is that some seem good and some not, which would suggest poor quality control.
if they all had the same problem, the same fix could be applied and the problem could be dealt with.
something wrong in the factory, or with the management or culture there.
not fit for purpose is a black mark.

Definitely a feed ramp problem with larger calibers.
Easy to fix though, as I did with my .375 H&H.

Do a search on here. Lots on info on the CZ issues, and yes it does appear to be the larger calibers that have issues feeding at times.

That is it exactly. A local shop here had a couple standard 550's, one in 270 win, and the other in 30-06. So pretty much identical magazine, bolt, etc. Just playing with them, opening the bold and pushing the follower down, one smooth as silk, the other stuck half way and was so bad you could see the flaws in it.

As you point out, inconstancy is the worst thing in any type of a production process. In CZ's case, sometimes it's the magazine box, sometimes the follower, some the bolt is real sticky, and they have had a lot of issues with the big fat cartridges in getting the feed lips correct. Plus the feed ramp issues.

And they turn out a lot of guns, I suspect the majority, that are fantastic. (You don't hear of the good ones as often;)

They obviously need a Sig Sigma type to go through and help them tighten the manufacturing process before any real change will happen.

Seems most of us prefer to bitch about CZ quality rather than answer your real question;)

Congratulations on the great find and great buy! Does it have a barrel band swivel? Really nice wood, cheek piece, actually says Safari Magnum on the side of the reciever?

Closest thing I am aware of is the UHR or Ultimate Hunting Rifle they made only in 300 win mag. It was supposedly very accurate and a premium rifle they put extra effort into. Looks like it was discontinued in 2018, but the announcement I saw left the door open to make limited runs in the future.

A fellow in Sweden l know uses a .350 Rigby on a ZKK602 action as his deer rifle. And he uses Kynoch Soft nose rounds . They are the best rifle actions that l know , on Par with Magnum Mauser. The ones before 1979 are the best. They have a little peep sight. Unfortunately , they are getting harder and harder to find.

I don't know the answer but it sure sounds nice.
I have a .458 that tends to catch on the 3rd round. I'm blaming short fat bullets in a long mag along with the need for some polishing.
I dint learn I have another waiting collection. I'm hoping the .375H&H naturally feeds better with the cartridge being in proportion to the action. I'm hoping it doesn't require anything other than a polish to be perfect.
I know there are some smiths familiar with these that get them running spoton.
Presumably they are still accurate and strong.
if the .300 is as described by Action Bob that would be a bonus.
I like the look of a barrel band, I just wanted one classic "Safari Rifle" in my small collection of useable firearm's.

    Evening, Bob.
Thank you for the reply. I, too, have had great luck with CZ rifles, this being my fourth. The only one which had some feeding issues was my 458 Lott which hung up flat meplat loads off of the left rail.
The rifle isn't a Safari classic, it has a plain (hogsback) stock and no barrel band swivel. Same sights, barrel length, and action size as both my 375 and 458 as they came from the factory. I've included a few photos below.

Mmm, perhaps we need to take the Dr's advice.
Just when I thought I had what I need.
    I don't own a Sako and I think id like a Winchester 70 pre 64 in a DG round.
I cant have em all but I thought the CZ was an affordable strong action.
