current shipping quotes from Africa for air and sea rates

Guess I never realized that shipping skulls and skins home was that expensive. Heck that's as much or more than the hunt cost. My daughter and me are going to South Africa next May to hunt plains game. Might have to rethink what we will bring home. This is the first trip for both of us and we want something to show from our hunt other than pictures. Will they allow both of our game animals to be shipped in one crate to here?

That certainly is something to think about. We have always kept any buckskins of animals that we took if we were having shoulder mounts. We have piles of them and don't really do much with them. I do not feel it is worth it. As far as shipping directly to you, it depends on what you have. I wanted my animals to come directly to me, they couldn't do that simply because of the 1 warthog which was even in its own crate. All the other animals were in one crate, but since the paperwork was done together, the entire shipment had to be shipped to a licensed taxidermist for clearing those animals. So just check ahead of time to see if anything on your list will hold everything up.

1-Hippo, 2-Nyala, 3-Impala, 1-Blesbuck, 4-Wildebeest, 1-Giraffe, 1-Buffalo, 2-Eland, 1-Mountain Reedbuck, 1-springbuck, 2-Sable, 1-Warthog, 1-Waterbuck, 1-Zebra, 2-Gemsbuck, 1-Kudu, 1 Crocodile. so 26 total.
It would be interesting to know what the crate actually weighed. Even though these are not finished taxidermy, there is a lot of weight in this package! A hippo, a giraffe, an Eland a buffalo and two or three of several species of plains game.

Sounds high, but the Coppersmith paperwork says 779KG

Just got (12) capes and/or horns in a crate that weighed 475 lbs. and was 50" x 50" x 30" shipped & insured Air from SA to Denver for $2672 - Badger and $550 to Gallagher Transport who handled the crate for USFW inspection and holding in their warehouse. This was end of April 2026.

Ok so the crate was finally released today and is being shipped to the taxidermist in CT. This consists of only skulls, hides and horns from our sept 2025 safari. So the charges so far pre taxidermy are 5500.00 for dipping and packing, 7600.00 for freight to the U.S., and now 4500.00 was the charges today from Coppersmith in NY. so we are pushing 18K before we even get to taxidermy. There is no doubt that prices are changing.

You’re likely being billed the actual shipping weight not volumetric weight. The shippers take the volumetric and the actual weight and bill you the greater of the two. Volumetric because you’re paying the “space”, actual because they’re billing you for space + fuel. Where did the $83-90k figure come from in the post of yours you replied to? Was that for finished taxidermy shipping? Was that by air or by sea?

For those that said his D&P was high, same with the shipping he’s bringing back 26 Animals with some really big stuff in there. The D&P breaks down to about $210/animal but I’m betting there are a couple life size mounts, big flatskins or something from the giraffe, hippo leather, etc. All told, that’s not a terrible D&P cost for the animal composition of his crate.

The 80-90 was simply a guess from the taxidermist in Africa when they were dipping the animals, I asked if we had them all mounted there, what the freight would be. I assume they were using with air as that is all I have used in the past.

My crate is ready to be shipped by AGH shipping, 1 shoulder mounted Cape Buffalo, 1 Shoulder mounted Sable and 1 shoulder mounted Zebra, $3125.00. The taxidermist suggested shipper was $5500 for the same 3 animals. I still have to pay Coppersmith, estimated at $1400, and I have to decide if I'm driving from Michigan to Chicago to pick it up, or having it shipped to me.

Did you get the actual bill from the shipper and coppersmith or are those just estimates? The accurate freight bill can only be given once the crate is complete and Coppersmith gives the actual bill only after it is cleared. This bill would have been 2500 cheaper without the storage fees. A lot depends on who is working at coppersmith and who is on vacation when your shipment comes in.

I paid the invoice the other day, for delivery to Chicago, When speaking to Orlando at Coppersmiths he said my costs would be $1400. So we will see what other costs are included, but I have had Coppersmiths handle several other shipments for me and the price quoted was what I paid. I'm hoping I don't get stuck with storage fees along the way.

Dam man, I just read your invoice, I would be so pissed off with $2400 in storage fees! I'm sorry but that is such bullshit for that to even happen, I have never seen storage fees on my invoices before, I wonder if its because your stuff stopped at JFK? The first time I shipped (d&p) trophies back I used Fauna & Flora in NY on the request of my taxidermist here in my home town. The only issue I had then was the insurance they wanted me to pay on my crate, almost as much as the shipping cost. So I asked them what happens if the truck runs off the road and ends up in the East river what would you reimburse me for? They couldn't give me a clear answer so I had them remove the insurance costs and my stuff made it to it's destination no problems. To be honest this is most likely my last African shipment.

Did they give you any specifics on why the storage is so much?

He said they charge $300 a day now for storage. They only told me that after they had my trophys for 10 days. I have never been charged storage with any other shipments I had with them in the past.

AHG is shipping a crate via FedEx to my house for $1450 or so. Not a huge or heavy crate and contains a shoulder mount nyalla, shoulder mount Impala, a euro zebra skull and a zebra pelt.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
