I thinking about ammo carrying options for my 9.3x74R.

I do love Jaques Tredoux's options. I have his culling belt for my .416 Rigby and it truly is "Art"

For this Chapuis 9.3x74R double I am tossing up between the belt or trying some of his ammo pouches.

There are some cheaper Aussie options, but Jaques gear truly is nice.

For those that have tried both options what do they prefer ?

I have a Els & CO open top slider made for doubles, Have used it with my 500/416 alot and like it. Have been using a Murry Leather slider for my 9.3x74 (Plan to upgrade to the Els & CO one that will fit this round.). Have a culling belt for my 375 class rounds. I like the culling belt but just haven't used it much.

Culling Belts are a little ostentatious for the traveling sportsman IMO, get a smaller slide or "pouch". Can't go wrong with any of the Murray Leather Products....not sure if its easy to do though being in Australia....

I have his ammo pouches for my .375 and love them. He also made me a custom designed carrier to put shells in for riding around in the truck. A little more durable and classier than the standard ammo box.

I have an Els & Co. Rhodes Classic Cartridge Pouch for my Ruger No. 1S in 9.3x74r that I like a lot. Based on its quality, I would consider purchasing their Somerset model made for doubles if I had one. I've never used a culling belt.

I have and use both, but i found; at east for me, is that the type of hunt determined my ammo carry. I even put extra ammo in my pants pocket because of the quick retrieval capability (and we all not that's not the way to go!)

I would go with ammo slides as you already have a culling belt.

I like leather goods and think these look great.

I might need something for my .375H&H.

Oh hello pc3, didn't notice this was your thread. I found this one useful when i was shopping around but there are lots like it.

I also looked at Rigby and Westley Richards websites for inspiration

@pc3 Roger who is a member here @yumastepside does some very nice letherwork. He's based down in Tassie so no hassles with international shipping etc. Send him a pm and discuss with him what you need. He made a really nice closed pouch for me but he also does open pouches and I'm sure he can make whatever you want.

did a post about my pouch a while ago
Finding good quality leather gear such as cartridge pouches etc, in Australia can be frustrating. A lot of leather workers know nothing about hunting gear and don't want to know. Most of the gear one finds is either badly made Chinese rubbish or crudely made stuff for the cowboy action types. During a discussion on another thread, our own @yumastepside mentioned he did a bit of leather work.

I work on the principle we build this country by supporting those who make stuff here. We exchanged emails about what I had in mind. He said he could do it even though it was different to how he normally does things. While I use an open pouch for competition, and would use an open pouch for DG, I also wanted a 5 round closed pouch so as to have clean ammo in case of dirt, mud etc. Truth be told I wasn't expecting much. This was reinforced in a later email when he said "I'm only a mug who likes playing with this stuff."

When the pouch arrived in the mail, I was totally gobsmacked. It exactly the design I wanted. The quality was exceptional, beautiful even stitching, nicely finished edges, attention to the smallest details and that undefinable quality that radiates from something built by a craftsman driven to make the best possible.

During the recent BGRC Nationals I saw a lot of shooters trying to use everything from shotgun belts through to pockets to carry their ammo. During one event requiring a quick reload against the clock, one shooter even reached into his pocket and tried to reload with an already fired case. Funny in a competition, potentially fatal on a DG hunt.

If you're an Aussie and in need of some leather gear contact Yumastepside and let him know what you want. You won't be disappointed with the result.

He has a few talents and his leatherwork looks great.

The Ammo Pouch is the single biggest advantage. The flap, and often a snap or magnetic closure, ensures the cartridges are completely sealed from the elements and cannot fall out, no matter how thick the brush, how steep the terrain, or how you move.

@idiot101 That is a nice, simple, slick design.

I have reached out Jacques....he made my .416 Rigby "Pancho Villa" culling belt and I love it :D

I am considering 2 x 10 round pouches with flaps on his belt (similar to the somerset els & co make), will be ideal when in pig country.

I went with the ones with no flaps. The rounds are extremely secure. I find that the flaps get in the way when trying to access rounds quickly.

I will keep that in mind...I can see how this would be the case

Don’t get me wrong the flaps looks nice and so keep debris out but I found that the high quality leather has enough stiffness that it tries to lay over the ammo and gets in the way.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
