Cost of a new wood stock

Hi Ferenc,

Cameron Hatcher does semi-finished stocks in quite a few classic British patterns.
He ships all over the world.

Another Aussie, Roger Vardy, has an excellent range of blanks, and also shiips all over the world.

You can get a pretty good blank for the money you are talking about. Check out Canyon Creek Custom Gunstocks. They post their price list and have lotos of pics of their work. Really nice work for the price in my opinion.

I've been checking with different stock makers and form what I've learned you can expect to pay $6,000+ cost of the blank! That's if you want a full blown custom stock for a large caliber rifle.
My experience was I got a grade 5 blank for $1500 then paid mother $2500 to get the stock completely finished with barrel and action attached

Thank you for all the help. It may be a bad decision but I might just start with an economical eBay stock and see what I can do with it myself, including installing pillars and bedding the stock and perhaps install cross bolts. If things go bad I am out of a few hundred dollars but reacher with a lesson.

I've seen very plain jane straight grained black walnut blanks for less than $100. If you do find a blank on eBay for example, the next step will be finding someone that will work with customer supplied wood, as not all companies will.

Inletting and shaping can be as little as $200 each, and 4 panel basic checkering starts at around $300. Finishing, adding a recoil pad, bedding, installing swivel studs will be at least $75 each.

This website gives some prices that most would consider the more economical end of the scale. Good quality work, but nothing extravagant.

If you want something truly custom $2,000 is a realistic minimum. As others have posted, good work and fine wood doesn't come cheap. The stock work on my my 450 Rigby went well over $10,000.

Probably the most cost effective way to get into a quality wood stock would be to find one on the Internet that is a takeoff from a rifle, or a new one made for your rifle that has never been used.

Several rifles I'm working on are worthy of custom wood, but others are more suited to a simple replacement stock.
Hello I have a very nice figured stock blank I want to sell i can text you pictures it's a nice piece of wood

All of my custom walnut stocks were done by LeRoy Barry at Canyon Creek. They were all in the $3k range. Leroy has been discovered and his prices are significantly north of that now.

Another option, if you have a wood stock on the rifle now, is to send it to RJ Renner and let Roger work his major on it. What he did to factory wood on a couple of No 1’s for me is mind boggling.

IT is very kind of you, but I am afraid I am not yet up for starting with a blank. Appreciate the offer though.

Thank you. Unfortunately, all I can find there are plastic stocks.
Sorry- I was rather dismayed by the cost some guys were quoting.
Boyd Stocks will supply one in many different configurations and grades for almost all actions. A browse through their web site is in order.

Well I ended up buying this stock.

It will either work or I learn a lesson, and perhaps even a skill or two trying to work on it.

No need to apologize. Thank you for trying to help!

I saw some of their stocks at a show. Talk about beautiful. The prices a couple of yrs ago seemed inexpensive for what you were getting. Might be worth a phone call.

I did a 9.3x62 build a couple years ago. Used a Husqvarna 640 donor with an FN commercial action. Purchased the blank from Ceil Fredi and sent it to manitou custom guns for inletting. Then Matrix Gunsmithing did the finishing and re-barreling. Stock blank was $400, shaping and inletting was $500, and full work from Matrix was $2,000. I'm not sure if Tim is still doing builds rather than just CZ parts mfg and upgrade packages. Of course, after this was complete I found an amazing deal on a vintage W.J. Jeffery magazine rifle chambered in .404 Jeffery that I couldn't pass up and now I don't really have a use case for the 9.3x62. I'm between putting a McMillan stock on this and making this a gun for moose / bear or just selling.

Well, this is an absolutely gorgeous rifle. It is nice to know what ~$3000 buys.
Admittedly I would be hard press taking this beauty into the bush.

I did get lucky with a gorgeous blank from Cecil and it was rather affordable. I had Will at Manitou help me select the best from the available selection at that price point. I didn't look at $600+ blanks but if this is what I got for $400 then I'm sure they're great. I will say, Tim at Matrix had a lot of personal issues going on while he was working on this and issues with his normal stock finishing partner so I'm not totally happy with how the stock turned out. We had agreed on checkering for example and that somehow slipped through the cracks. There was a lot of material removed in the wrist / grip and it changed the shape of the stock from what I had originally wanted as well. All in (including donor rifle and shipping costs to send pieces to multiple states and back to Matrix to fix issues once delivered) I was north of $4k on the rifle. I spent the same amount on my .404 for a rifle with a fantastic name and great history - got very lucky and was connected with an older gentleman who was past his hunting years and none of his children or grandchildren had any interest in hunting. He wanted the rifle to go to someone who would take it back to Africa and use it for many years, which I was more than happy to do. Jeffery below for comparison.

Well, that is just an incredible rifle and great story to go with it. Should stumble upon another rifle like that, you know how to contact me :-)

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
