Everyone talks about the Python, but not nearly as many talk about the predecessor. The Colt 3 5 7 Magnum revolver was first and it has the same internals as the Python right down to the same silky smooth action. Of course it doesn't have the full lug with the ventilated rib and the Royal blue finish, but it is a fine revolver. Colt made the 3 5 7 revolver from 1953 - 1961 then phased it out. I found this one at an estate auction last year.Won the bid at $390 and after I finished paying the taxes and buyer's premium I paid out $450. No complaint there. I thought it would go higher, but there was no interest in it. I won't complain. It's clean and in good shape. The serial number is just four digits (# 2***). According to the Colt Proof House website it was made in 1953 ( or 54). The year that the model was introduced. Unfortunately the wooden target grips didn't come with it, but that just gives me something to look for. I've wanted a Colt 357 or a Colt Trooper in 357 for several years. Ideally I wanted the 6" barrel so this was a lucky find for me. People are starting to figure out the 3 5 7 Magnum, but they can still be found for a much better price than the Python.

Hears a pic of what was referred to as the Poor Mans Python the Colt Trooper also a great shooter. One used to pick one up at a up at a pretty reasonable price but that has changed over the last several years

Beautiful pistol for a great price! I have several S&W .357 revolvers and all have been an absolute joy. It might be heresy, but I would take my model 27 over a python any day.

I bought a Trooper Mk III in the early '70s. The start of my pistol collection. They were a bit hard to come by then. I was told that most were being shipped to South Africa/Rhodesia. Wonderful gun.

Another nice Colt .357 Magnum

Nice find on the .357! Have owned Colts and Smiths so chambered, as well as Rugers. Currently have two Colts, a Mk V Trooper and a Border Patrol, which is just a Mk III Trooper with Border Patrol markings and a less polished finish. Both are good shooters but if I could only keep one it would be the Border gun, shoots lights out.

Well I couldn't resist I went back to the Gun Store this AM and bought the 686

Well since everyone is showing their favorite Smith & Wesson revolvers I'll play along. Here are a couple of mine. Model 19-4 (top) and the Model 49 Bodyguard.
