Christchurch mayor calls for ban on expanding bullets 'designed to do great damage'

New Zealand's new gun restrictions do not go far enough and should ban the type of bullets used in the mosque shootings, Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel says.

The nearly 100 victims shot in the March 15 attacks were struck by a type of expanding bullet designed to do maximum damage inside a body.

However, hunters using the ammunition to shoot animals say there is no humane alternative.

A ban introduced last month, which will need to be confirmed by legislation within a year, bans military ammunition such as incendiary, explosive, armour piercing and tracer bullets. It follows the tighter gun laws banning military style semi-automatics and assault rifles introduced in April.

"He [the gunman] used soft-nosed bullets that caused incredible damage," she told The Guardian newspaper.

"They are designed to do great damage and they did."

Following the attacks, medical staff at Christchurch Hospital revealed the extensive damage done to the victims. Surgeon James McKay described how the bullets had ricocheted internally and damaged organs not in their path.

Fifty-one people died and some of the survivors have undergone multiple surgeries.

Bill O'Leary, former president of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association, said banning soft-nosed and other expanding bullets would cause extreme cruelty to animals.

"Whether it's for pest control or other types of hunting, soft-nosed ammunition is used because it's more humane. It kills quickly because the bullet expands and makes a big wound channel, and the wound is so devastating that they die."

O'Leary said he understood the sentiment behind people wanting to ban soft-nosed bullets.

"I know what the effects of [soft-nosed bullets] are – all hunters do because they have seen the horrendous wounds they cause.

"But there is no humane alternative, from the small rabbit through to the big game. As a country we are absolutely dependent on them for hunting, whether its recreational or to control introduced species".

Nicole McKee, a firearms safety consultant and secretary of the Council of Licensed Firearm Owners, agreed the ammunition was necessary.

"We are a nation of hunters with a large farming and rural community.

"The only humane way to put down livestock or any animal down is with the correct ammunition, and that is soft-nosed or soft pointed rounds."

As part of an amnesty the first buy-back event for outlawed guns, parts, accessories and magazines will be held at Riccarton Raceway in Christchurch on Saturday. This will be followed by others across the country until December.

Ammunition is not included in the buy-back scheme.

The world slowly unraveling before our eye's.

There should be a ban on mentally challenged people in public office. Unfortunately that seems to be the number one qualification in today's political environment.

Buy back? That's one of the biggest scams going. Sure, they "buy" them back, then take them home for their own use or sell them to buddies and cronies. Some do get destroyed, but many high end pieces go into private collections.
There is no humanly possible way to totally keep people from obtaining guns. The black market, smugglers, terrorists, someone with a home workshop can mill parts and build his own just as they do now. Witness the NZ shooting. How did he get his armorment? Where did it come from? Who did he get it from? Proves that confiscation does not and will never work. Just makes it easier for the bad guys.

Ain’t that the truth!

The idiot wanting to ban soft nose bullets is just that an idiot and a massive anti twat.

From what I can make out the Loser who did the shootings obtained the semi auto because a Police Firearms officer did not do his job as stipulated. If he had of the Loser would not have been able to legally obtain a semi auto rifle. The solution was a very simple and cheap fix. Fire the incompetent/lazy arse who did not do his job. Just my 2 bobs worth.

For years we have been told that FMJ bullets needed to be banned because they were only meant for killing people. But for one shooting where the loon used soft nosed bullets, now we have to ban them instead. Sort of like the rest of gun control, none of it really works, so keep banning things until it does. When they run out of things to ban, they will stay say they need to go further.

It is not a buy back as they never owned the guns in the first place, it is a confiscation pure and simple with a paltry and totally unrealistic sum paid (maybe) for the guns they take from law abiding gun owners.
He bought it (sic) legally athough he should never have had a license because the police did not do their job of vetting him properly. Had they done so he would have been banned from owning guns and we would be having a whole nuther conversation now.

This is the advise COLFO (our NRA so to speak) is giving to peope over the first "buy back" circus.

DO NOT ATTEND THE CHRISTCHURCH HAND IN EVENT.

Tomorrow Police are hosting the first buy back event in Christchurch. This first event is deliberately being hosted in the city where the shootings occurred. This event is designed to draw as much negative attention as possible to you and your firearms.

The media are intent on making a trophy out of you to be displayed on TV, in newspapers, and in social media.

We understand there is a high risk that gangs will be in attendance to observe who has guns.

Once you enter the venue you can not leave with your firearm if you disagree with the price offered.

Many accessories and guns are not listed for buy back. You will leave without your firearm and potentially no compensation.

We ask that you consider for your own security and safety not to attend this first event.

REMEMBER - THERE IS NO RUSH TO HAND IN YOUR GUNS. YOU HAVE UNTIL DECEMBER 20th

In the meantime COLFO are working on legal action regarding the confiscation.

You can still hand in your guns for compensation at your local police station. This is our preferred choice.

Just look at UK, getting rid of legal handguns resulted in... large increase in crime rate using such weapons. Now the ding dongs want to ban knives. What’s next? Other bits of cutlery? Forks can be rather dangerous after all, as can credit cards with sharpened edges. How about glass bottles? They can easily be turned into a weapon too... As a preventative measure they should castrate all men to put a stop to rapes.

I propose a ban on knee jerk reactions
