CFE223 powder in mid bore cartridges

B Nelson is running his Whelens at or near .375 ballistics. His loads will not be for the faint of heart nor for all guns. However, some of his top loads are out of printed manuals. Neither of my Whelens are strong enough to stand his loads. They being a '95 Winchester and a 1903 Springfield. The '03 is a high number rifle, but its still very old with very old steels, and not designed for such adventurous loading.

Has anyone here tried this CFE223 powder in either the 358 win , 35 whelen, or 9.3x62?

Mate I have had heaps to do with CFE223 in the Whelen and the 308. You can PM me if you like and give me your phone number on the pm . I will gladly assist with anything you need to know about what I have done.
Bob Nelson 35Whelen.

In my CZ 9.3x62, I worked up to 2,458 fps with the 250 gr TSX FB and CFE223 Accuracy was very good, but I was a little disappointed at velocity. Case capacity was getting close and I did not push it further.

My favorite 9.3x62 powder/bullet combination at present is RL17 and the 250 gr Nosler Accubond. In part because the AB has a high BC, but also I was able to hit my target velocity of ~2,525 fps with good accuracy.

CFE223 gives the 250 grain hotcore 2,700fps out of my 25 inch barrel Whelen using Speers load info.
I didn't think the 9.3 would be th at far behind

What load are you using.

I got to try that. I have some 250 Woodleighs PPSP's.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen,
Bob, the 9.3x62 250 gr TSX FB load was at 64.2 grains of CFE223. Lapua brass, F210 primers, long COL at 3.409". Chro'd (4) with a Magnetospeed at 77*F.

I think the CZ550 American barrel is 23.5".
3 from that batch did 0.84" at 100M. 3 at a half grain less also shot to sub MOA.

Joe that's close to the load I use in the Whelen
64.2 grains of CFE223
Remington case and Remington large rifle primers
COAL 3.4 inches
250 grain Speer hotcore
Chrony chronograph
25inch stainless barrel 1in 12 twist made by MAB Engeneering Australia
Radial port muzzle brake 2 inches long
0.75 inch 3 shot group at 100yards
2,695 fps average muzzle velocity.
Hornaday 250grain spire point 2,720 fps
Hornaday 250 grain round nose 2,650 fps. This is due to the smaller bearing surface.
I would say that the Barnes has a different bearing surface again as that is all I can give to account for the velocity differential.
When loading the round nose I know I had to go up a couple of grains to get the velocity but it was still in safe load area.
The 25grain round nose gave the best group of half inch very tight clover leaf.

Would you mind sharing load data for 286 grain Barnes copper bullets.
Unfortunately I don't have a load for 286gr Barnes but I do for thee 250gr TTSX. It is:
250 TTSX @ 3.291"oal, cci200, 62.2gr's CFE223. I get 2530-2550 F/S using a Blaser R8 22" barrel.

That is the load I used with accubonds also. They are grouping at .75" out of my CZ.

I was seeing very tiny groups with 63.0 and a Speer 250 Hot-Cor in my Whelen. I have not run it over the chrono yet, but there were no signs of pressure, even at 64.0. The copper scrubber works too, and the bit of copper wash that was in the bore at the start of my session was completely gone at the end.

Reading this thread again, I looked at my reload notes and see where I also tried this load (62.2 CFE223 with the 250 gr Tipped TXX), but at 3.400" COL. Notes indicate "so-so but this was with the original trigger". Not to mention some other accuracy work I just finished.

The CZ 550 did 2,535 and 2,502 fps over just two rounds chronographed.

I was only ever able to source just 1 box of the 250 TTSX. If they become available again I might give it anther go, possibly seated a little below my original 3.400". [Note the CZ has a very long throat and lots of magazine length.]

My son shoots a CZ550 in 9.3x62 also. His load for the 250 TTSX is 61.0gr of Alliant's 2000MR seated around 3.33"- 3.35". His velocity is around 2550fps.

Thread dredge here.
I have a few pounds of this stuff now and a new to me model 71 Browning lever action in .348 Winchester and was wondering if anyone had been using this powder in their .348's
Seems like it should be a good fit, the action on these rifles is said to be good to 50K CUP with no problems, but most loading manuals keep .348 loads down under 40K, in deference I suppose to older rifles of unknown condition.
The .348 case capacity is the same as the .35 Whelen, though obviously the M71 is not as strong as a modern bolt rifle.
Hodgdon does not list CFE as an appropriate powder for this round on their site.

According to load from a,disc
62 grains of CFE223 with a 200gr ftx gives 2687fps at 47,512 cup
With the 200gn flat point 64.4gn gives 2713fps at 47,395 cup.

250gr Barnes 57 gn 2400fps and 46,168 cup

250gn Woodleigh FNSN
54gn
2,370fps
47,225cup
Best I can do for you mate.
If you have a different projectile in mind send me the lenght, weight and bc and I will work it out.
Usual caveats apply to loads
Bob
