What do you mean by your guy is doing 4457 electronically? Doesn't CBP have to physically see the gun?

Of all those things the 4457 is probably the easiest, I can drive to Dulles and get it done any day of the week 24 hours a day.

I can book a flight quickly, the slow down would be permits and letter of invitation etc. from the outfitter.

4457s can be the easiest or most difficult part of the process. I had a time where the 3 closest offices to me wouldn't answer the phone, ever. So I had to drive to all three of them, only to find out they wouldn't come to the door of their office when you knocked either, and the notes posted on the door said "Only seeing people for 4457s by appointment, call this number". Then listed the same numbers they weren't answering anyway.

I found an office that was much easier to work with, although further away. So, now it takes some time getting them done, but the office is reliable for now, which makes it relatively easy other than the time commitment.

No they don't have to see it. Nothing new really. The Hunting Consortium has been doing this for their clients for many years. Our new guy in Midland is very accommodating and just the pics will do it. For me 4457 has been one of the most difficult. I used to have to drive nearly 2 hours to Midland and deal with a cranky, angry, old government worker who hated life.
Now with the email system and me typically taking the KGun and the R8 in .300Win on most every safari it's pretty easy.
I am wheels up in less than a month now for Nyakasanga with @DALTON & YORK SAFARIS

My experience in Atlanta probably mirrors others. For three of my latest four rifles the officers did not want to see the guns at all. However for my latest for this years hunt they did. When I nicely asked why the difference their answer was it just depends on do they have the time to do it or not. He said the main point is they will always be checking the guns when they come back into the US not as concerned when they go out which makes sense

But the whole point is to prove you own it before you leave. I’m quite surprised they will go off a picture. It would be possible to get a picture of a gun (or other high value item) that is overseas then fly to wherever and bring it back in without paying any of the import duties. That would be a huge savings.

Having just imported two Heym 89b, I’d have much preferred to send photos of the guns which I had aplenty, and then flown to Europe to retrieve them.

Our CBP have proven awesome on getting 4457 forms, enjoy looking over what weapons bring through, and generally super polite even when busy. It is a 3hour drive though and going across couple-three times a year and changing up what guns I bring each trip makes for frequent visits.

Makes for a good excuse to visit Costco and think living in Alaska you get used to it. Heck, my 14yo daughter and I just traveled 1500+ miles round trip by truck and plane to get a couple late season, any bull moose permits. Most harvest tickets we can simply get via website, but some of the best ones require getting them in person within the game management unit itself.

Yeah, I would love If they did it electronically near me. But I don't see how it makes sense for what they claim the purpose of the document is.

I was fortunate to find that my local regional airport in Colorado handled these and it was very simple. For those that haven't done it, you dont always have to go to a major airport if there is a regional airport (nearish to Denver in my case) that has international flights.

Glad to hear that and I’ll look into it, my closest option is the McKinney TX municipal airport.

The CBP officer there really makes a sport of being a pain in the ass and makes up all sorts of his own regulations and if at all possible I’ll avoid him from now on.

I guess it’s about like flying with a gun and dealing with airlines. Best to find rules, print them out, and take with you. Lots of the customs guys tell people crap like you have to put scope in there. Typical untrained govt workers. Kinda like what I’m getting to deal with here in the screw worm quarantine!

Just out of curiosity. What are the absolute minimum time frames and requirements for a short notice trip like this for those that may not be prepared but would consider it.

Check list:
Flights
Rifle permits
Invitations
Deposit Payments
Import/export arrangements for trophies.

If you and the outfitter are aggressive on getting the paperwork done in Zim can be done in7-10days pretty easily. Other places more or less!
