Impressive! Very nice buck.
Tell us more: what distance was the shot? What archery setup are you using? Looks like a good hit so he must not have gone far.
Did you weight him?
final questions: (always about the joy of eating free range meat!) will you eat the heart? Do you have a tradition of cooking a tenderloin ASAP or something similar? With the age of that buck, you might have a good amount of sausage to be made.
Thank you everyone for the comments.
@Tra3 I have seen this buck a few times already this year. Again taking 2 years of passing bucks and not seeing anything mature on cams. This year when I saw this guy a couple times I knew he was a shooter. Then about 2 weeks prior to me getting him, I saw him while in the stand for the very first time.
My property has two neighboring wood lots one to the east of my land which is the whole way from front to back. Then In the north west corner another. So this particular stand is a great spot as its a crossing point for them to come from either bedding zone (the two woodlots) and cross to either water or food etc. By the way these are my favorite types of spots to hunt. I am big on the no scent, no sound, you were never there school of thought. I know guys love hunting over bait, scents, use calls etc. I have nothing against any of them, I have just never been successful with any of that, and if I have been its always young bucks or does. And every time they come in they are high strung, wind checking everything and anything mature and smart will wind you first and will be gone. So anyhow two weeks prior I did see this buck, he came from the Northwest wood lot and approached my fence line. He walked all along the fence line and I knew he was old when I saw him. But he just didn't get within bow range.
The day I got him it was another evening hunt and he was in the woodlot bedded down to the east of me. I saw him make his way behind me the whole way. I could see he started suspecting something was in the tree and I knew he was headed directly to my wind, like you could see he literally made a B line for that area. Amazing how they know. But fortunately for me my wind path was in a shooting lane that I had so when he stepped out I saw him lip curling and I knew I had a couple seconds before that tail goes up and he is gone. So I sent an arrow and he ran maybe 30-40 yards and just piled up.
I am archery hunting. The bow I use is a Xpedition Archery X ring 7. I bought a brand new MX-16 from them last year that I haven't even set up yet lol. This Xring has been with me for about 8 years now and she was the one who took the other 2 bucks too. I haven't given up on her good luck yet lol.
