Can I save this rare 300wm pre 64 m70 ?

I apologize my earlier statement was meant to say I don’t disagree. I’ve corrected it.

I wouldn’t travel with the gun internationally at all. Domestically I’ve never had a gun checked anywhere I’m not sure who would be doing the checking.

I do believe there is a process for having the gun serial number repaired.
Get pulled over on the rd to a hunt.
I have never been checked like that. But know a few who have.

I have been checked by game warden in the field a lot of times.
Some times they check the gun some times they don’t.

I could see being on a hunt and getting checked. Them finding a defaced number I can see they being a big problem.

( quick brake down and only part of the sta.)
State law here is knowing alter or modify the number with intent to disguise the identity

The way that number looks if checked I can see problem in the field.

Id say take those photos to a good smith. Get a quote for repairs. Use that as a basis for negotiations
For example. Rock island Auction few months ago expected sale value 1600-2500

But thats in pristine collecters condition.
but the current rifles collecters value is trash.

Only you can determine if its worth it to you

There are half-a-dozen pre-64 Model 70 .300 Win Mags on GI at the moment. Priced $3400-4500.

If by “saved” you mean restore to factory specs, I’d wager you’d be approaching the numbers of one already in good condition til you’re done. Coming from the viewpoint of shotgun restorations, that is speculation (and assuming nothing else hidden to cost you money) as I’ve no experience in the rifle side of things. Restoration is seldom a break even prospect and usually a money loser. You have to do it for the love of whatever you’re bringing back to life.

You can have a much sexier pre-64 .300 H&H for half the price of a Win Mag. Bunches on GI.

Theres a 300hh for sale near me 1400 and 1 is 1700

I have had serial numbers restored by a good laser engraving service. Since these are not totally gone it will be easy to restore them.

If they can be restored
That’s fine.
But as they are now I would not want to get checked and would use it to get the price down

I have thought about that, plus the pre64 M70 actually has two different engraved serial numbers on the action ( and both matching “ but one slightly damaged “ ) I don’t know how much merit that holds with a police officer at the airport in Mexico or Namibia, Mozambique ! LOL

I don’t think it would have much merit side of the rd in the US.

It’s a FFL to FFL transfer from Montana to Texas
Guy traded a dirt bike for the gun and wants to make a 375 ruger out of it!
I could just buy a soul less tikka or Sauer 100 , but a Winchester M70 300wm is the 1st gun I bought my self hauling hay all summer in high school, unfortunately I was forced into selling it.
While it has some nostalgic value to you, you may want to slow down a moment. Take those pics to a gunsmith and ask them what it will take in their opinion to get it back to the gun you want it to be. Add that to the sale price to decide if it's worth it to you.

I bought a pre 64 300 win mag that had been rechambered to 300wby for $600 last year at a gun show. The action was worth that to me.

Interesting. In 40 years of hunting in the US including on a lot of public land I’ve been checked once. It was in a national refuge in SD. He just asked us to hold up our licenses didn’t even ask for ID or take them in hand.

If it's within your budget and it's what you want I say roll with it. (y)

It is not rare. Pass and buy something that actually has value. That is essentially a truck gun. Don’t waste time unless you have plenty of time and money to waste.

Dog hunting back in the day.
You expected to be checked every day.
And they normally check guns also.
Dove hunting I think I was checked 4 times in one day.

Some of our w m a you check in and out not all the time with game wordens but Fwc employees.

And surprisingly a lot of the checks were on private land.

It's not a "good deal", but if you like it, what the heck!

I wouldn't pay the asking price.

You are in the "free state" of Texas.
I'm in the "free state" of Georgia.

I'm pretty sure that local LE, nor game wardens, would not care about the condition of the SN.

I would, certainly, have some work done, if taking it out of the country or into a "blue" area.

I am not a lawyer.
Being in possession of a firearm with a damaged serial number is felony.
Where you get into the maybe maybe not is with pre 68 firearms.
It could be argued that if the rifle has been sold post 68 then it is in the interstate commerce system.
Same with stolen and recovered.

Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(k)) makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly transport, ship, or receive, in interstate or foreign commerce, any firearm which has had the importer's or manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered, or to possess or receive any firearm which has had its serial number treated this way and has been part of interstate commerce at any time. Because nearly all commercially made firearms are considered to have been in interstate commerce, possessing such a firearm is generally a federal offense, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

Hard pass on it.
