My father was a well known taxidermist in the area in which he lived, and he had passed away 2 years ago. I am finally deciding a cant still keep everything.

One of the bigger items that has been passed down to me, is a pair of elephant tusks. I do have paperwork in regards to the kill and how dad obtained them.

Any information on how I may find a buyer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Welcome to AH Carole. Would be kind enough to post some pictures, weights and measurements of the tusks. Also where are the tusks located?

Hi Carole and welcome to AH. Best of luck selling those tusks.
Would be interesting to see pics and weights as CAustin mentioned.
Become very educated on the legalities of lawful ivory trade. Did your father have a fellow taxidermist friend who might be willing to assist you? Just a thought
You could also post them in the classified section here on AH.

Thanks for your comment, unfortunately the few loyal taxidermy friends dad had, have since passed as well. All the others seem to have different agendas :(. Either way, i did post some info., and will also post in the classified section here. Thanks again for your input.

Hi Carole, we are legal ivory traders in Amsterdam and trade all over Europe (coming to an end in a few months). We have traded in South Africa as well. Please let me know if you are interested in discussing further. Hope to hear from you.

Just watching this thread, Across state lines....The Lacey act, I'd be very concerned about.....
They may be grandfathered in but interstate commerce clause about endangered species may, even it was at that time legal, not saying it will, come back and bite this sale. Any animal requiring CITES cannot be traded or sold across that lines at any time, Lacey act violation, felony.
Not a lawyer but only my opinion.
Yes legal to own , legal to sell intra-state if he has it legally without cites from back then, look at the bottom signature line if he had a cites...
Agree to import with no intent to use commercially or for trade, as soon as you sell it violates that signed clause. In my opinion , but just an opinion.
Not that they can prosecute him or you, but confiscation at the attempt would be my question....
And weight, anyone scratching their head on these?
They gotta be pretty hollow tusks to be that length and circumference and only 43 and 52lbs?
I would be on the phone to Virgina and the USFW Legal Dept and clear this up quickly if I were you.

Looking at Wikipedia, so there may me some error, it says the Lacey Act of 1900 prohibits "the trade of wildlife, fish and plants taken illegally".
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacey_Act_of_1900?wprov=sfla1
There's a link there to the actual law, for deeper reading.
It seems to me, also not a lawyer, that if wiki has the correct info you SHOULD be okay to sell these tusks since they were legally taken. I'd agree with Dennis that you should communicate with local FWS for quality info.

@The Artistry of Wildlife , Dennis, I took a rough guess at the weights, take diameter of the tusk at the lip(inches) multiply by the length of the tusk from lip to end(feet) gives me roughly 48 pounds, so I am guessing the weights are correct.

    HI Carole,

I am in a similar situation. I have a pair of legal and beautiful gigantic tusks I need to sell. They are in PA and I have house there and in Florida so I do not know of the legalities of where I am allowed to sell them. I want to comply with the law and advertise them accordingly. Do you have any suggestions? May I contact you via email?

    Regards,

    Jennifer
