Are there safaris where you hike on foot and camp, maybe 50-75miles ~week? Maybe where you aren’t specifically trophy hunting but might hunt for small antelope for food along the way?

Always wondered this myself. I’m relatively fit and young. Don’t give 2 shits for luxuries and would rather immerse myself in the hunts of my heroes of old. But then I look at it from the ph side and this might be even more expensive!

I saw online where PH Jason Van Aarde set up something like this in remote Tanzania.
He has good connections in the country.

Just know, in Africa… you pay more for remoteness. $$$

I don’t know about 70 miles a week. But you will be fly camping and not so much of trophy hunting. Kinda what you are looking for?

Ask this outfitters, they might offer something like that, above all for buffalo, but be careful, you need some little money in reserve.

Michel Mantheakis Safaris Ltd

I was some years ago in contact with both of them. It was mainly about buffalo hunting, but because of the terrain, trekking and fly camps were in some areas more a necessity to be successful than something for fun. Nothing came of it because such hunts are very expensive.

I did within a deployment with the French army in Africa over days such trekking/camp actions. Being on foot for days in hot climate, sweating under the equipment and the weapons, and not being able to wash, you do that rather for money than to spend a lot for it.

I explored this concept with my PH. Africa is generally a much warmer climate than wilderness hunting season in North America. It's very difficult to keep the meat from spoiling or consumed by bugs or predators unless it can be hung in the cooler fairly quickly. That means it has to be put in the truck quickly. One needs to keep in mind that saving the meat can be an issue. In RSA it's marketed by the outfitter or property owner, depending on the arrangement. They generally don't squawk about blowing big holes in small animals (bang-flop is very much desired) but having it go to waste in the field is undesirable. Sure, the hunter pays the trophy fee no matter what but operators are often counting heavily on the bonus from sales of meat or discounts for property owners taking it.

Another difference is we don't have baboons in North America (well ... only during opening day of hunting season :D ). Those rascals will gladly make a mess of any meat hung overnight in the field. Pretty smart too.

The immediate removal of the meat can be organized, since such a Camping/Trekking walking Safari would in most cases be undertaken for the adventure than for an actual necessity. Besides, you also have to provide food and water. It is not easy to carry everything for a week, especially drinking water which is needed in large quantities under these climate conditions, and is not so easy to find in some areas of Africa.

If anyone actually arranges one of these I’d be be very interested in the details. I understand it’s would be something quite expensive. But maybe something to save for.

I only see the North of Tanzania for something like that. Don't forget the safety factor. You cannot just set up an unprotected tent camp anywhere in Africa. Such camps need to be guard at night. A permanent hunting camp in a more or less habited area is something completely different.

Tanzania is going to be out of reach for most hunters. I don’t see anyone organizing a low cost “trekking” safari as described in that country. It won’t be advertised but reach out to outfitters in mountainous areas in South Africa and Namibia. I’ve had one PH that wanted to organize a hunt on foot where camp would be set up in advance each day and hunt from point A to point B and staff would move camp while you hunted and collect animals with vehicles to take to main camp. You might cover 5-10 miles a day but it will contained within property boundaries however large that may be. You need to take a few trophies to make it worthwhile to any outfitter, but you can definitely take a few birds and others too. These type hunts would be on a per request basis. Private land in Namibia or South Africa would be most accessible and have the largest number of PHs possibly willing to conduct hunt.

@JoeSoap, @tomahawker , Check Natasha Illum Berg, PH in Tanzania.
She does her hunts from Robin Hurts camps, but they’re a lot more walking than typical safaris. She sounds like a true hunter purist. I have little doubt she could organize a fly camp walking hunt across one of Robin Hurts blocks.

I've also wondered about this, along with a horseback safari. I remember reading something about an operator using horses some years ago. I'm following this thread.

I have who did a horse back safari last year while her husband did a parallel mountain back safari. They had a lot of great photos, lions and all, I will have to find out their outfitter.

I have to admit I would be pretty nervous on a horse around lions, but she said they don’t see you on the horse or the horse as prey.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
