I first traveled to the savanna of Cameroon in 2015 and had a great safari and collected my LDE, western savanna buff and 4 other B/C list animals but always wanted to go back and pick up a few animals I didn't get the first trip. Enter Faro Safaris which was one of the few safari companies that offered an eight-day buff/roan safari without having to pay full board for a longer LDE hunt.

I planned it two years ago to be sure I could make the trip in January when it is a wee bit cooler... 100 degrees midday rather than 115! The Vannier family has had Block 18 since 1971 and four generations have hunted the area. They have a great conservation legacy going here and a wonderful camp on the Faro River called "Eden".

I used a camp rifle, Brno .375 H&H that had some miles on it but shot where it was pointed. Importing guns into Cameroon is possible but a tremendous hassle and after a fiasco in 2017, when I tried to get a rifle in to hunt bongo with Mayo Oldiri I said never again.

I was paired with PH Frank Vannier, the father of Xavier, who pretty much has taken over operations now, and I couldn't have been happier. Frank had an encyclopedic knowledge of the area and was a great conversationalist. We got along very well. Camp was comfortable and the food was okay given what they have to work with in Cameroon.

I was successful on a great, old buffalo, a very nice and strikingly colored roan bull for my two A animals. I also took an exceptional kob, there are hundreds of them here and you can be very picky. I shot an unusual western bush duiker, both of these animals I did not take in 2015. I have taken roan in Benin and Burkina but this was my first in Cameroon. By day 5, we were down to red river hog, a rare and tough trophy to come by. We walked miles of riverine bush the last three days and found tracks, spoor and rootings but could never catch up to them. Such is hunting...

I can heartily endorse Faro Safaris, I took good representative animals and saw lots of game in the concession. There were two other hunters in camp with me and both got their LDE bulls so it was a happy camp. Below are a few pictures from the safari

Congratulations on your success.

Excellent. I saw you taking this trip on social media and have been looking forward to hearing the report. Love the character of that savannah buff. Great roan...awesome bush duiker...amazing kob. You are well traveled and I always enjoy your reports. What's on the future list for you?

Congratulations on such a wonderful looking safari! Really nice old buffalo!! I've enjoyed my hunts in Cameroon as well.

Looks like that roan is blind in one eye-very cool old warrior buffalo. Congratulations on your success!

Botswana in May with a group of friends for the kudu rut and working on securing a spot in Chad for 2028.

Actually an interesting story, after the bull was down the trackers took dust from the ground and sprinkled it in the roan's eye, nose and ears. Frank said this is a superstition they have and practice on the eland and roan so that when they approach in the future the quarry won't see, smell or hear them. One of the things I love about hunting in Africa is learning all the bush lore and superstitions!

Great hunt and report, thanks for sharing.

Congratulations, Russ! Really wonderful hunt with great old animals. You chose well in going with the Vannier’s.

Congrats on a great hunt and some very good trophies !

Congratulations on a great hunt. Western Africa's incredibly intriguing, with Cameroon the last stable spot to be hunting many of these species. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

.

What a great hunt Russ ! Congratulations and that certainly makes up for the fewer game animals in Tanzi on your other hunt! Thanks for sharing, looks like it was a super trip. Cheers, Charlie

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
