I was wondering if anyone here has added a bird hunting day to their african hunt and if so did you feel it was worth it?

Yes I did and it was well worth it. Everyone of us (4 hunters) spent one day of our 10 day Safari hunting birds together. The outfitter didn’t charge any extra to do it. We hadn’t booked our hunt to include birds and decided to do it in the middle of our hunt just to change things up a bit. We had a blast doing it. We still got all the trophies we booked for and got some bird mounts we hadn’t planned on.

Rock pigeons in South Africa, absolutely the hardest wing shooting I’ve had. Had two days of goose hunting, also in South Africa, birds had never been hunted and we used the ugliest excuses for decoys imaginable, great fun. And there was one evening shooting sand grouse in Zimbabwe.

Oh, and there was a hunt using a falcon near Bullawayo that was an incredible experience.

South Africa has a season, so make sure you go during it. I would have loved hunting behind PawPrints GSPs! Unfortunately I was there out of season. Tons of huntable birds around!
Good luck in your pursuit!

I hunted Francolin after I had shot enough animals in Limpopo. Had a good time. Very much like pheasant shooting. We ignored the dove and pigeons, which were everywhere.

We spent a couple afternoons chasing guinea fowl and had a blast. The bird hunting is great, and I hope to go do a detracted hunt for upland birds and waterfowl for a few days sometime.

Every last time I have been bird hunting. Just do it.

I’ve had a number of good shoots in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Well worth it.

I forgot the really quick guinea fowl drive we did. Scored “a left and a right”.

Bird hunting in Africa is such a hidden gem!

It is always such a fun and relaxing time after a safari to hunt birds for a day or two.... You can always challenge your PH with who is the best shot also.... ;-)

I always try to add a day of birds. Its a great way to break things up mid trip, species, or just a good day of fun.

My biggest regret in my three trips is I have never taken a day for bird hunting. I definitely want to do it!

I hunted Francolin after I had shot enough animals in Limpopo. Had a good time. Very much like pheasant shooting. .
And what dogs were used?

My PH treated me to guinea fowl hunting after we had filled my "package." It was a blast, and I have renamed them "flying eland." Do not miss a chance to bird hunt because it was as much fun as stalking big game. One of my friends did an evening of dove shooting, and we had dove breasts stuffed with cheese and jalapenos wrapped in bacon for the happy hour brie. It was fantastic. On the list for next year.

Thanks,

Jeff

Will have it in mind

How did the process of getting the birds mounted work did you have the work done in the us ?
