We've all done it! I was tagged by my buddies 505 Gibbs. Thankfully mine didn't cut as deep.

I've done it with much smaller cartridges than a 458WM and 505GIBBS. I think it was a 30-06 that first got me as a young teenager.

Beautiful piece of timber on that rifle. What are you using for a recoil pad or do you enjoy how that one feels?

Cant speak for his gun, but if a gun is properly weighted and balanced, a pad isnt required.

The rubber pad on my 8-bore is darn near rock hard. But there is no problem shooting it.

I manage with the steel butt plate and recoil. The rifle weighs almost 10 lbs empty and the barrel porting also helps.

I am definitely not shooting a box of shells a day, and really after two or three I am good. But the recoil and barrel concussion are less than the 50bmg that I had years ago….

I would get rid of the porting and add an extra pound to the rifle with lead shot. Depending on balance the lead could be added to the front or rear. At around 11lbs (with proper balance) it shouldnt be a problem shooting at least 10 cartridges in a sitting.

I can fire up to 6 cartridges from my 8-bore in a sitting before lasting effects start to kick in (soreness/stiffness). Any less than this and I would be worried about lack of practice.

No offence intended but porting and muzzle brakes are mostly good for decreasing the value of guns and annoying everyone around the shooter.

I hear you, but the reality is the barrel and porting are both part of the original build by Al Biesen and I am not going to alter any of it. If it turns out that I really don't like it, or I need a different configuration, I will buy (or build) a different rifle.

I would replace the stock with exhibition grade English walnut and make an English style stock. 450/400, 9.3x74R, 300 H&H or something else? Thinking about wood blanks 2,3 or 8.

I like the straight grain in 8 and the figure in 2. Any of them will make an excellent stock

@HunterX - I like blank 8 for the build of a Ruger No. 1 based on the shape of the blank and figure of the wood.

As for the cartridge, it would depend on what you already have and how you envision using this rifle. But seeing as you posted it in the ‘big bore’ thread, I’d have to go with the 450/400NE.

I am open to other cartridges too. This build is mostly for practice. I do have a 450/400 barreled Ruger that I will restock. The donor for this build is a 458 Win, but I want to make something more obscure / classic.

How about a 458EXPRESS ? It’s based on the belted cartridges of the 375/300H&H family with South African roots. Like a 458LOTT but better.

1, 3, and 8 are the only ones I would look at as they are the only blanks there with proper grain flow through the wrist.

I would also look at a 404J but the 450/400 would be a strong contender.

I had my Tropical barrelled No. 1 in .458 WM rechambered to .450 Nitro 3 1/4”.

Was pretty straightforward, from memory it also required a new extractor.

I am building a 404J on a Dumoulin Mauser action. So I’m covered there.

Don't forget about the 375 Flanged Magnum, a pretty aesthetic cartridge as long as you don't call it a 375 H&H Rimmed. I doubt few Americans know what flanged is, so it gives a romantic ring to it.

Like to have a 375R in a Blaser K95, but would fall short of a big bore by .025”.

I have been doing a lot of work with my 416 Weatherby Mag -- load it down and its like a 416 rem - full power and its one of the power house's out there. I also found a new in box 375 H&H Colt Sauer that I picked up, it will probably be a closet queen. my go to 375 will be my Sako Bavarian, it is a sweet shooter. Now to fill in the gap, I just ordered a Park West Dark Continent in 416 Rem, can I join the club??
