BETTER QUESTIONS To Ask When Looking For A Hunt

How many hunters do you have booked before my trip?

What is the comms situation? Sat phone needed? WiFi?

Lately I've seen a number of new members and threads asking for recommendations.
I bookmarked this for my own future reference and thought it was time for a bump.

QUESTION: Do you have many repeating clients?
BETTER QUESTION: What is the returning clients %?

QUESTION: Please provide me your reference list.
BETTER QUESTION: ADDITIONAL TO YOUR REFERENCE LIST, PLEASE PROVIDE ME 5x CLIENTS DETAILS NOT REFLECTED ON THE REFERENCE LIST, FOR THE PAST 3x YEARS.

Been to Africa 4 times already. First trip was in 2017. Joined the AH forum IIRC in 2015 or 2016. This forum membership helped me immensely.

I asked a lot of the basic questions; I should have asked the better questions.

This is the first time I have seen and read this OP. I'll definitely be referring back to this post when booking future hunts with different outfitters.

Thanks for bumping this back to the top.

Lets go back to basics.

After 5 safaris, I think it will be helpful even to more experienced.

For example, what is top 12 of basics questions to ask outfitter first, when looking for a hunt?

1. Do you assist in firearm clearance on arrival and departure for your clients?
(Yes, there are outsourced agencies that offer this, but it does not hurt to ask. Especially for less visited countries)

2. Who will be my PH, and will I be all the time, with the same PH?

3. What is your success rate, on buffalo, kudu, etc whatever is on the list, in last two seasons? Expected size of horns? (if that matters to client)

4. Are all the animals on the list in your hunting area, or will it be required to travel around? In that case how long daily drives are expected?

5. Are there any extra expenses expected, or your offer is all inclusive, please confirm?

6. How much is expected on tipping? (it is never included in all inclusive offer)

7. What are communications in your camp? Do you have wi fi?

8. In case of renting the rifle: what rifles, calibers, and bullets do you have available? And at what price per day, or per round?

(in my experience, while local rifles are generally good, availability of premium ammunition is questionable, and often is down to basic cup and core bullets, which may be a problem on magnum power rifle)

9. Is there option for local sightseeing and visiting national parks, or historic places? If yes, please provide details, recommended extra days, and additional price?

10. Please provide references of previous clients within last two years, and those who are not listed on your web site?

11. For Namibia, and South Africa: please let me know which animals of those on the list are hunted in high fence, and which one are in unfenced areas? (the point is to avoid using term "free range" because the same term in marketing is also used for hunting of self-sustaining herds in the fence, and can be misleading)

12. For South Africa: what is your hunting area size? (The point is to avoid using word "fence", as it is avoided in marketing and advertising, but in the same time it will give client an idea of the size of fenced area, which depends of his level of acceptance and definition of free range hunt.

It is not all there is to ask, but it will give a good start.
Then communication can develop further.

Also, I have noticed that communication on whatsapp is more informal, faster and easier.
Email responses are slow, or very often not answered.
Whatsapp is best way for modern communication.

One could discuss whether it is useful to ask people or not. Ultimately, you will receive only personal opinions from people with varying degrees of experience. I have been hunting in Africa for over 30 years, and initially, before the advent of the internet, obtaining informations was no easy. One was primarily dependent on the organizer of the hunt or one had to gather information from the hunting press or from other hunters. However, this was manageable, as hunting in Africa in the early nineties was not commercialized and for tourist hunters as it is nowadays, and also hunters from the colonial times were still accessible for good advices.

One thing I must admit:
I try to be informed as much as possible, and ask everything that comes up on my mind.
But once I sit back on airplane and take off, I have a feeling, I dont know nothing.
Now, god help me into the unknown.

So far, it always ended up good.
A testimony to professionalism of my PHs.
I am also not demanding client.

What I expect from PH is just to put me in position and give me opportunity to shoot.
Camp can be of any type.
I will survive without complaints sleeping in hammocks, drinking warm water - no fridge, no beer, and beef cans for lunch without kitchen.

Trusting your PH and embracing the unknown is half the fun.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
