Anyone been getting sick on flights lately?

Not in your house but at home doing normal things like work shopping etc is what I mean. Just read up on the science of the HePA filters. Or keep the fear going for the new guys so they will stay home out of fear.
Yes , when my wife worked , flus & viruses at the work place were very common.
I always blamed the manager in her department, because most of the coworkers had children. Child picks up virus sick for a week parent cares for them, burns up paid sick days, then they get sick , and come back to work sick , and every one in the office exchange bugs, all school year .the cycle was so crazy.
She still has chapped hands from a hand sanitizer addiction

This is perhaps a bit more serious, but a reminder to all! Neighbor's brother (50s, good shape) flew to Europe to visit his daughter in her international studies program. Upon returning home he had multiple blood clots and was hospitalized for a time, and is now resting at home on blood thinners, awaiting some type of procedures. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate and Get Up/Move Around on flights. Catching the local crud from Babu is NOTHING in comparison to this! Building upon what Red Leg said, a "great" place to catch the bugs mentioned above are the kitchens where they prepare the local ethnic cuisines (including right here in America.) Aside from the potential immediate effects of the food, 'Cannot tell you how many times I heard someone coughing up a lung, etc. when the kitchen doors swing open at a (pick your fav poison-region. I'll be nice and not call out a Continent, but it has a poor track record with Airplanes as well) restaurant only to have same develop at home or at work a few days later.... :( Do the simple things to boost your immune health prior as well.

"The risk of blood clots—or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)—on flights increases significantly during journeys lasting four hours or longer. Prolonged immobility in cramped seating, cabin dehydration, and low oxygen pressure can slow blood flow and cause clots, which pose a serious threat."

May not be remembered but except for a couple aircraft, cabin pressure altitude is 8000 ft. The 787 and 350 are at 6000.

  • Physiological Impact: The pressure is similar to being on a mountain at 6,000–8,000 feet. This reduces oxygen saturation slightly, which can cause mild dehydration and jet lag. [1, 2]
  • Medical Conditions: Passengers with certain cardiopulmonary conditions may be affected by the reduction in air pressure and should consult a medical professional before traveling. [1]

I hate hand sanitizer but use it regularly at the hunting shows where I seem to catch something. Got lucky this year. 3 conventions and didn’t get sick. Maybe first time!

There are almost 50 comments talking about getting bacterial pneumonia, being puked on in the airport, getting pink eye multiple times, getting covid multiple times, etc.

But me simply saying "you are more likely to get sick on a plane sitting with hundreds of people than sitting in your house" is, according to you, "keeping fear going" and "making new guys stay home out of fear"? Again, to me, that's a silly assertion.

I would love for everyone to go visit Africa, and I don't think I've said anything that would stop a new person from going. But, if me stating a simple fact that "you are more likely to get sick on a plane sitting with hundreds of people than sitting in your house" strikes so much fear into the heart of someone to the point they don't go, well...... that might be more of an issue with them that they need to work out with a therapist.

I wear a mask and carry travel packs of disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer. Sanitize after TSA trays. Wipe down tray table, the back of the seat where the tray table touches, seat belt, screen, arm rests, and the light button, air controls if you use them. I am immunocompromised and travel more than 50% of the time and rarely get sick.

*OMT My elderly Mom did develop a bad case of pneumonia as a result of a long-distance trip with connections (not Africa; either Islands or SA?) At first they thought it was complications from tick borne disease, but then confirmed it was P (and they'd seen similar cases in recent '25-'26 travelers!) It has permanently affected her lung capacity (scar tissue/damaged areas). As a result she can no longer deal with high altitudes (and most flights!) So, it IS something for the elderly to consider prior!!! And she LOVED hiking at high elevation. :(

Sorry to be slow on the reply but we were on our first safari!
We boarded to leave ATL on Delta for the nonstop to Joberg. I chose to sit across the isle from my bride as we usually do on trips. The departure got delayed because they were waiting on a family stuck in security and their seats were interspersed in the area we were sitting. They finally arrived and we began to get under way.
There was a guy a few rows up who was acting very strange and trying to interact with a young family that had three kids with them. As we were taxiing out, a family reported that this guy was eating edible pot candies and also seen to be snorting powder. Then, he makes and attempt to touch the other families toddler again and they protested… he then proceeds to said out loud “ I want off this plane!”
So, they turn the plane back to the gate to remove him and his baggage. While there, the girl sitting next to me asks for a stewardess and then pukes on my foot, and on my neck pillow that had been under the seat. A LOT of puke… enough that they had to get hazmat on board! The investigation with the parents reveals that the girl is having her first period and has cramping and nausea.
Our delay is just over two hours total and I had to put my neck pillow out of its misery in the airplane trash bin!

OMG, what a nightmare. Once hunting you'll forget about this ordeal, and it will all become part of the story. Safe travels and looking forward to reading your report and pictures.

I flew back and forth to Alaska 20 times 1998 till 2009 got really sick just once .I got sick going and coming this time really bad .I dont think they hardly clean the ventilation on planes now .

I caught some kind of respiratory issue on June 11 Delta 200 flight. Still fighting it and saw dr again yesterday for more blood work. X-rays show lungs are clear. But sinus and ear issues still.

14 days after landing in Houston, still having ear issues and sinus issues. Dr's have run tests, xrays, blood work. All is ok, on tests and xrays. Have fluid trapped behind ear drum but getting better. No infections, Drs really have no idea and say it will take time to drain and clear up.

Very strange that nothing is out of order. We have seen a number of respiratory cases that have tested negative for everything.

I generally pick up a sinus problems on long haul flights. Unfortunately, most places you can’t buy Sudafed.
