Any gin drinkers here?

Grand Isle or Fourchon?

I grew up in Prairieville (I usually say BR, cuz nobody's ever heard of Prairieville), still hunt the family land in W Feliciana.
I was born & raised in Houma. Graduated from Terrebonne High School & LSU. I hunt at a camp near Brookhaven a lot that's owned by a high school buddy who lives in Prarieville now. I've got another good friend who has a camp in Grand Isle that I go down to a couple of times a year. It seems like we've been doing more crabbing than fishing lately. As you can see in the photo below, the bottle of single malt Irish Whiskey I brought is in the middle of the table. No gin in sight. ;)

My place is about 20 miles south of Woodville, 15 or so miles SE of Angola. You guys seeing any bears your way? We've gotten a couple on game cams the last couple years. Up by Angola, they're just covered up with black bears.

Small world. I had some good college friends who had a plantation in Weyanoke, LA about 10 miles east of Angola. It was on the Ouida Irondale Rd off of the Tunica Trace. My daughter & I would stop off and visit whenever we were heading south from Arkansas. I don't remember them ever mentioning that they had seen any bears in that area when they were still living there several years ago (they moved to Abita Springs). All we've seen on our game cameras in Wesson, MS is deer, turkey & the small critters.

Several of the dudes I know that hunt the area between Hwy 61 and the river, and the MS border on the north and Hwy 10 (at the Audubon bridge, the area around Riverbend power plant) on the south are having to hang their feeders high up between trees so bears can't get to them. Also a couple guys in Point Coupee who hunt the bottoms near the river are reporting lots of bears as well.

Norwegian makers have the Harahorn gun which is quite good and they make some very good aquavitae also .

The last time I was wandering down Magazine St in New Orleans, I popped into a bar while waiting for a friend to get off of work so we could do dinner. I was the only one there so I struck up a conversation with the bartender & asked her what her best gin drink was. She replied "Negroni". So I said, "I'll take one!".

I was not impressed. Definitely not the drink for me. It was okay for sitting there & shooting the breeze. I actually ordered another one while in Florida just to give it one more chance. Nope!

The last time I was wandering down Magazine St in New Orleans, I popped into a bar while waiting for a friend to get off of work so we could do dinner. I was the only one there so I struck up a conversation with the bartender & asked her what her best gin drink was. She replied "Negroni". So I said, "I'll take one!".

I was not impressed. Definitely not the drink for me. It was okay for sitting there & shooting the breeze. I actually ordered another one while in Florida just to give it one more chance. Nope!

Don't worry was taking the piss....and yeah negroni not my idea of nice either....ex wife loved them....but honestly hasn't biased me....

I love the Negroni, and I find it to be a great cocktail to immediately tell the competence of the bartender.

Now for something really exciting, you should have the white Negroni, which is gin, Suze, and Lillet Blanc.

I stopped in a martini bar in Little Rock once that had a Vesper, the classic James Bond drink, with Lillet Blanc in it on their drink list. It was okay. I tend to like my martinis to be gin heavy: The bartender can look at the vermouth or Lillet but shouldn't feel obligated to actually pick it up & use any of it.

The "problem" with the Negroni for me is with the Campari or possibly the Suze (since I haven't tried a white one yet). Liqueurs that are bitter, have herbs or are described as being earthy or having spice notes can throw a drink off for me depending on what those flavors are.

I guess I just like my cocktails a bit neater & less interesting. Spices in my food? Yes. Spices in my drink? Rarely.

I am a member on our great forum due to Africa Hunting with the alcohol an incredible bonus for me in that it has vastly improved both my taste and pallet!!!!!

I'm with @Saul - at least on the gin + campari part. Never been much of a vermouth fan. For my taste buds, the only drink that comes as close to "refreshing" as gin and campari is an ice cold grolsch. St Arnold Brewing (in Houston) brews a wicked good grolsch with the label "Fancy Lawnmower." Yeah, it hits the spot after sweating off your nuts in the gross, humid heat of the Gulf coast.

It would be extremely difficult to be an active member on AH and not aspire to have at least a few of the finer things in life. The members here have been so generous with their knowledge and encouraging in their zest for all things Africa, it’s caused me to make several very good firearm decisions. You can count yourself as one of those who I’m speaking of.

And yes, it has applied to spirits as well. Cheers!
 
WRT @spike.t - another libation for which I've acquired the taste is grappa and it's South American 1st cousin, pisco. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only non-Guinea in the world who enjoys the stuff. ;)

Actually, I used to drink Grappa, Greek Ouzo and Turkish Raki. All similar drinks. Preferred Grappa the best though.
