Nicholas dePencier Wright, BA, JD, MBA
Founder & Chair of the Board
Nick is a Toronto based lawyer and political campaigner. Founder of Animal Justice, he has been actively involved in animal issues for over a decade and has worked on a wide range of campaigns at all levels of government. Nick has documented the East Coast commercial seal slaughter, participated in Canada’s largest puppy mill raid and was a founding Executive member of the Ontario Bar Association Animal Law Section.
Camille Labchuk, BA, JD
Executive Director
Camille has worked to advance the interests of animals for over a decade. As a lawyer, Camille represents individuals and organizations in animal law cases, defends animal advocates, and seeks out litigation that enhances the interests of animals. As an advocate, Camille’s work includes documenting the commercial seal kill on Canada’s East Coast, exposing cruelty in farming, and campaigns against trophy hunting, circuses, zoos, aquariums, shark finning, puppy mills, and more. She is a frequent lecturer and media commentator on animal issues.
Anna Pippus, BA, JD
Director of Farmed Animal Advocacy
Anna is dedicated to advocating for animals used for food in Canada, having been involved as a board member, volunteer or employee of several farmed animal protection and veg advocacy organizations. She formerly directed the legal advocacy program of a major non-profit, where her efforts resulted in previously unprecedented animal cruelty charges and raids. Anna has spoken about farmed animal law issues before numerous legal and non-legal audiences and in countless print, television, online, and radio publications.
Elizabeth Schoales, BA, MA, PhD, LLB (Candidate)
Director of Operations
A former professor of history, Elizabeth is now devoted full time to animal issues. She has participated in a number of federal, provincial and municipal campaigns to improve animal protection legislation, and has served on the boards of several animal welfare charities. She resides in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and is currently pursuing a law degree with the University of London International Programmes, allowing her to examine how more progressive animal legislation in the EU may be applied to a Canadian context.

Vaughan Black, BA, MA, LLB, LLM
Vaughan is a law professor at the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he teaches Tort Law, Judicial Remedies, and of course, Animals and the Law. His current research focuses on the regulation of transportation of animals from farm to slaughterhouse.
Katie Sykes JD, LLM, LLM, JSD (Candidate)
Katie is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia and a candidate in the doctorate of law JSD program at the Dalhousie Schulich School of Law in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With Peter Sankoff and Vaughan Black, she is co-editor of Canadian Perspectives on Animals and the Law (Irwin, 2015). She has also published numerous academic articles on animal and wildlife law. Katie attended the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and subsequently clerked for Mr. Justice LeBel of the Supreme Court of Canada, earned an LLM from Harvard Law School and practiced at a leading law firm in New York before returning to academic law in 2010.
Peter Sankoff, JD, LLM
Peter is a Professor at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law. He specializes in animal law, criminal law and the law of evidence. He is the author or editor of five books, including Animal Law in Australasia: A New Dialogue, the first book ever published in the Southern Hemisphere to focus exclusively on animal law issues. Peter has also taught an advanced animal law course entitled Comparative Concepts in Animal Protection Law at Lewis and Clark College of Law. From 2001-2005, he was the Director of the Animal Rights Legal Advocacy Network, a group of lawyers working on animal-related issues in New Zealand.
Rebeka Breder, BA, LLB
Rebeka practises animal law at a full service firm in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is the founder and current Chair of the Canadian Bar Association – British Columbia Branch, Animal Law Section and sits on the board of the Vancouver Humane Society.
Ari Goldkind, BA, LLB
Ari Goldkind is a passionate advocate both for the City of Toronto and for his clients as an experienced criminal defense lawyer. Ari recently placed fourth in Toronto’s 2014 Mayoral race, fueled by his commitment to truth, innovative ideas and dealing in facts and evidence. Ari is a passionate speaker and political commentator, regularly appears in the media and in front of large groups to speak about a variety of topics as a legal expert. He cares deeply about the well-being and safety of animals – it is the issue closest to his heart. Ziggy, his 13.5 year old black lab mix is like a child to Ari, and the love of his life. Kimberly Carroll, BAA (Radio & Television Arts)
Kimberly brings her extensive media background as a television host and producer and her strategic skills as a personal development expert to advocating for animal protection. She helped found Mercy For Animals Canada, co-created the “Why Love One But Eat The Other?” transit ad campaigns that ran across the country, and has been a spokesperson and board member for various animal rights and veg advocacy groups in Canada. Kimberly grew up in Brandon, Manitoba and now lives in Toronto.
Suzana Gartner, BA, JD, LLM (ADR)
Suzana is committed to enhancing animal welfare and has been dedicated to this cause since childhood. She completed her Master of laws degree at Osgoode in 2013, wrote her LL.M. thesis on reducing euthanasia in city shelters, and has advocated and lobbied for legislative and policy reform for shelter animals for years. Suzana helped establish Gartner Kostanska, the first law firm and mediation practice in Canada, exclusively dedicated to animal law matters. She serves on the Ontario Bar Association’s Animal Law Section as the Program Coordinator.
Evelyne Kostanska, BA, JD
Evelyne co-founded Animal Justice while practicing commercial real estate law in Toronto at a full service national firm. From 2010 to 2011, she completed a legal fellowship at a prominent animal protection charity in Washington, D.C. Evelyne has worked extensively on issues relating to animals in captivity and animals used in entertainment. Evelyne helped establish Gartner Kostanska, the first law firm and mediation practice in Canada, exclusively dedicated to animal law matters.
Lesley Fox
Lesley has been involved in the non-profit sector for over a decade. She is a certified Humane Education Specialist through the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), and graduated with honours from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Public Relations, Marketing Communications and Non-Profit Management. Her recent achievements include lobbying various municipalities to adopt anti-trapping bylaws and working with the BC Ministry of Education to have animal issues included in school curriculum. Lesley is currently working as the Executive Director for the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals.

Zeynep started in Animal Law while articling at Animal Justice in 2012/2013. Zeynep is currently Investigative Legal Counsel for Last Chance for Animals, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to ending animal exploitation through education, investigations, legislation and public awareness. She now works to challenge widespread animal abuse by advising the investigations department, compiling complaints for prosecutions under state and federal laws, as well as petitioning for regulatory changes. Zeynep received her J.D. from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a member of the California and Ontario bars.
Neva Marie Novakovic, BA, LLB
Neva studied English and Philosophy at McMaster University prior to graduating from law at the University of Sydney, Australia in 2011. Neva articled with Animal Justice in 2013/2014. In addition to working with Animal Justice, she now sits on the executive of the Ontario Bar Association Animal Law Section.
Stefanie Stamm, BA, JD
Stefanie studied Criminal Justice at Mount Royal University in Calgary, during which she volunteered at the Calgary Humane Society. She graduated law from the University of Ottawa in 2014 and articled with Animal Justice in 2014-2015. As a law student, Stefanie extensively researched the issue of animals used in testing and lab facilities. She wrote her major legal paper on cosmetic testing on animals and wrote her directed research paper on medical testing on animals.

Sarah is originally from Calgary, where she completed undergraduate degrees in Psychology and English. She obtained her law degree at the University of Victoria, where she was an active member of the Student Animal Legal Defence Fund, a student-run group committed to raising awareness of animal law issues in the school and community. Sarah articled with Animal Justice in 2014-2015. Her family includes five dogs and one cat (who thinks he’s a dog).
