I'm curious if anybody has ever hunted with Discount African Hunts (discountafricanhunts-com)? They have super low prices but they almost seem to be too good to be true.

    I have not.
There are a few folks I know that have encountered the owner.
    Perhaps someone will PM you.

Hey HTCHunter. I just got back from a hunt through discount African hunts a couple months ago The prices were incredible. And the hunt was no less so. If I can answer any questions, I'd be happy to help. When I get in front of a computer I'll throw a couple pictures on here. It I took the spiral slam and some other plains game.

Your post raised my curiosity so I checked out the website. Just to be clear, this is an agent who books for multiple outfitters is many locations. Not that it's a problem, just as long as you realize you are not dealing directly with the outfitters.

The package pricing for most looks very attractive until you add more guests and trophy animals. The trophy fees look good with a couple of these outfits, but on the high side with some others once you add trophy animals outside of the packages. Also, the lodging looks pretty basic with a few of them. I would recommend making sure to request lots of pictures and references of the intended outfitter before you book anything to ensure that you are getting the outfit and trophy quality advertised.

Make a list of priorities in order of what is most important to you on a safari. I.E.: trophy quality, species available, quality accommodation, amount of land available to hunt, logistics before, during, and after the hunt, trophy care, etc. Then begin asking the right questions and check off each priority met. With a little time and effort, you should be able to find the right combination of quality and value.

I would also suggest looking hard at the many proven quality outfitters who are sponsors here on this site. Why go with the unknown when you have a wealth of highly recommended outfits at your fingertips? Last piece of advice is don't book on price alone. Worst mistake you will ever make IMHO. Best of luck to you in finding the right outfit.

I second what BSO Dave said. Besides having a list of priorities, I would call John at Discount Africa Hunts and the other proven outfitters on here and let them know what the priorities are.

For example, I told John I wanted the spiral slam and some really big warthogs. My kudu went 59 1/2 and 58 inches. My eland was a stud (can't remember his length), my nyala was 27.5 inches, my bushbuck was the only animal that didn't meet my admittedly high expectations (14 inches). Even my warthogs were studs (both over 14 inches).

This was my first time going with a booking agent and I was very pleased with the experience. Rather than booking with an outfitter that represents only one property, I was able to let John know what I was looking for and he was able to customize a property to what I wanted.

I can see how you would need to be careful with this type of thing, but it sure worked well for me this time.

Hope you find the hunt you're looking for!

    Matt

Hey Brickburn- John at discount Africa hunts put me on matswani. I hunted with a guy named KP Van Dyk. He was really the reason it went so well. He's a game warden in the Limpopo and had a lot of relationships that got us on some great properties.

I've since heard matswani bumped their prices considerably. Too bad. I paid $235 for those warthogs (each) and the kudu was a great deal to.

Pay attention to the detail. Some of the trophy prices for additional animals are outrageously expensive!

I booked a hunt through John and couldn't have been happier. I will likely book with him next time I go.

Buyer beware. John posts trophy prices for all hunts and they vary widely with each outfitter. It gives you an idea on who charges outrageous prices, those I avoid

Here's the rest of the animals taken on the trip. The ram with the arrow in his mouth was a "meat" buck the owner asked me to shoot straight on at 25 yards. I was aiming for the white patch on his throat... shanked it. Luckily my PH, KP Van Dyk, is quick with his free hand shooting on sprinting animals! Everything was with a bow except for the bush pig and the second bushbuck ram.

This was such an awesome experience. I've been to Africa 3 times now and this trip eclipsed the other two. Can't wait to get back!

That's pretty much what I'm saying. Amongst a few others $1200 for an impala caught my eye! As did transfer fees of $1000 round trip not being included. Hence me saying pay attention to the detail as some of those trips are more costly than some outfitters regular prices for a comparable trip.
